These are by no means new firearms, but I inherited 6 guns today due to a death in the family. Thanks Uncle Paul, I'll put them to good use.
Ruger .22 LR Mark 1 5.5" bull barrel pistol. (good shape)
High Standard .22LR target model pistol. (pretty bad shape)
Winchester model 67A bolt action .22 rifle. (shooter, not collector)
Marlin model 81 bolt action .22 rifle. (Shooter, not collector)
Remington 742 Woodmaster in .280 Remington (definite shooter, far from collector)
Winchester model 1987 12g (possible shooter, highly modified)
Got the .22's figured out. Even ran 100 rounds through the pistols today, and the Ruger is a tack driving machine. The High Standard shoots well, but needs some TLC.
Never shot a .280 Remington. Rounds look similar to to a .30-06, slightly longer case, and the mags fit my 740 in .30-06. Is this the round known also as the 7MM express? My other Rem autoloader is a great brush gun, and this one came with a 3-9 Weaver, plus it has irons. The boys will likely end up hunting with this one as they get bigger.
The most interesting gun is the Win 1897. Looks like the stock was shortened to add a recoil pad, and the barrel was shortened to 21.5 inches. The barrel and receiver sections have the same serial number, but the thing that bugs me is that somebody cut down a full choke barrel (marked near breach). Anybody ever redo one of these? The finish is gone, I mean NADA, the stock and barrel have been screwed up, so I'm thinking it has no value other than possbile resoration. Thoughts?
Definitely holding onto the Ruger, Rem 742, and 1897. Have 10 other rimfires, and only one of the others might stay, the Win 67A.

Sorry to hear your uncle passed away but it's always good to see guns passed down to someone that will use them instead of turning them in to be destroyed or something like that. I'm pretty sure the .280 and 7mm express are the same thing. Seems like remington played the name game with it and tried to get it to sell better but it never quite caught on like the .270 or .30-06. The 1897 is a pump with an external hammer right? They are big in the cowboy action shooting so they are chopped up, refinished, etc quite a bit these days.

Yes, the 1897 has the exposed hammer. Pretty neat looking.

Andy, I shoot a .280. Smoking gun. I've killed 2 elk and 5 deer with it. You can find factory premium rounds that push it just under the 7 mag as far as speed goes, and speed kills.
It was originally called the 7MM express, but Remington got smart and figured out they can't fool hunters and changed the name to .280 Remington. You will like it. One thing, Remington originally made it in a tube feed, model, and all the bullets had to have a blunt or round nose. That made it inherently less accurate. Then they offered it in the 700 series magazine fed models, allowing any pointed 7mm bullet, and great rounds started popping up all over.
I find the 155 to 165 grain bullets ahul the freight and shoot very well. I like Noslers myself. If you can find them, Speer made some off the shelf premium ammo called NITREX, and the 160 grain Grand Slams flew great out of my Modle 700 Mountain Rifle, and killed 2 deer and 1 elk.

That Ruger Mk I is one of the more popular target pistols around. You can always find lots of mk II's up for sale, but few people want to part with a mk I

Andy be real careful with that 1897. Some are able to fire a round as you pump a new one into the chamber after firing the first round. Sounds like yours was modified for a home defense weapon...WWI it was used by our troops for cleaning out trenches.

Tony I found out by violating rule #1 in regards to firearms....Know Thy Weapon! A friend loaned me a 97 to try while my autoloader was being worked on. Didn't say a word about that special characteristic.  I found out about it the first flock in the dekes.

The Ruger and .280 are staying. Nice try.
Gotta get some dies, cases, projectiles, and load up some ammo for the .280. It cames with 12 RP rounds, look like Remington's standard power points. Those will get tossed, and I'll start fresh.
I shot trap with a model 12 that also allowed "fire on close", which was great for doubles once you learned the trick. I'll probably just feed it AA's.

Got a couple this past week myself. Helped a buddy move and got an 870 Express and an unknown model Remington .22 with a little scope for my trouble. Didn't want them in his house anymore.
I doubt the 870 has had more than a couple shells through it, if that.
The .22 is little more than a toy...plastic stock, etc...but it'll make a good starter for my son. He'll be learning on a BB gun prior to that.

Sounds like you got a Nylon 66. It is a reliable gun, but feels kind of funny, like a Crosman 766.

Andy, you amaze me...you nailed the family of guns. After ten minutes with my good friend Google, I find that what I've got is a Nylon 10, produced from 1962-64. Total production of only 8,606 pieces. The rifle is VERY clean...a couple of very light scuffs just below the scope (Weaver B4 - tilt off base), but other than that, it looks like it has spent its entire life in the old leather gun bag it came in.

I will agree with the Crossman comment...not terribly comfortable in these big hands, but for my 8 year old it should be just fine. Doesn't mean I won't shoot it though.

You didn't tell me it was a bolt gun. Remington made a fair amount of the Nylon 66's (auto loader), and you are right about the scarcity of the bolt gun.
