I want to take a trip to the upper Klamath and there isnt a california section here so I thought I would ask it here (Oregon is close to the upper klamath). I would like to know some good spots to go from the bank. Some where between iron gate and I-5. Thanks for any info on this section of the river and any help. Thanks again

Without a hell of a hike (up and down) the majority of the 'accessible' upper K is actually in California. Above that is pretty much 'trout water.'As silly as it sounds some of the best water is right off (up/down stream) from I-5. Very short drive south from Ashland.
As the upper K is (normally) not a destination river you'll usually have the whole area to your self.

Thanks for the info. I have driven from I-5 up to iron gate dam before and saw maybe one spot to fish from the road. I was just curious if anyone else from here has been out fishing that area from the shore and where they went? Thanks again for the info

It has been awhile since I fished that area. I learned to fish on that strech of river.Access is limited in that area due to private properety. You have a few aeras from Hornbrook to the dam.The most access is to go to the rest stop exit. Then go under the freeway and take the old stage road up river. You can also park right there walk back across the bridge and fish that hole above the bridge.

Just finished reading Kutzkey's fishing report. If the salmon are still there. You could go up to the dam and fish that first hole down from the closed sign. Also the third hole down. You will find a turnout and a high bank.Trails to the river. You can fish that to the fence line.

Does anyone know how the drift is from the dam down to I-5? Like how difficult or dangerous?

You don't have to go that far.Take at the Al Kutzkey bridsge is good. If you plan on starting at the dam.No big rollers or rocks that will get you. If you can read water that is. It may be shallow in a couple of spots. There is a good book on the Klamath that gives great detail on how to run the holes.Best thing to do is drive the old road and scout it if you want to go all the way to I-5. Not the greatest take out either.

I wasnt sure how long the drift was from the dam down. So most float from the dam down to Al Kutzkey bridge? Is that the Ager Rd. bridge? Also where is the first put in below the dam? Thanks again

Yes that is the Ager road. The first put in is right at the dam. Road at the bridge goes to a gravel bar. Sign 3500 ft from the bridge is the starting point.A good little hole. The next four big holes are good salmon holes. Then past the fishhook is mostly steelhead water.

I think it might be a little late for the salmon this weekend, but If you were to go there for steelhead where would you start? I appreciate all the help.

It's my home water. Been salmon fishing the last 6 weeks. We had a pretty good season but in my opinion it's over. There's still plenty of fish in the first 4 holes but they are getting very dark. The last couple of trips we hooked a few nice steelhead while back bouncin. It's time to start targeting steelhead !! As someone already said the water from the dam to the fish hook restaurant is primarily salmon water. But from the hook to the Klamathon bridge is very good steelhead water. Dam to the bridge is about 7 miles. You can also put in at the hook and out at the bridge about 5 miles. The dam to I-5 is a heck of a long drift, i would'nt do it. The dirt road on the south side of the river above the rest area has decent bank access for a mile or two.

No bank access, it's all private. If you have a boat i can show you the way sometime.

If you were to go from the bank, where would you go? I have a drift boat that I can borrow but the first few times I will probably go at it from the bank.
