Well I priced different fly reels and saw they were more than I wanted to spend for a reel. I did find a Pflueger medalist 1598 RCX for under 40 dollars. Extra spool was $15 more. The reel claims to hold up to a 12 wt with backing. The other reels looked nice but the least expensive one was 160 dollars. I have had good luck with pflueger products in the past and am willing to give it a try for less than 1/3 the cost. Waiting on Ups.....will keep you posted.
Marty, thanx again for the clarity you gave me about "metal" vs. drift fishing. I just wanted to comment on your spey fishing. Sounds like your going to have some fun. I don't spey, but I'm commited to creating my own lines for my 12wt. that I use occasionally. I call it my "modularization process". I've cut up a floating 12wt. line into three ten foot sections. I cut up the Deep Water Express (800gr.)into a 5, 10, and 15 ft. sections. They are all looped with mono. Now I have a lot to work with. I'm still experimenting. I tend not to overload the rod nowadays. It hurts. But I like a variety, both with the kind of fishing (fly as opposed to drift, etc.) and with the setups I use within a certain discipline, such as fly fishing.
Well I got the pflueger loaded with the 12wt line. Pretty tight fit on the reel with backing. I would like to have a little more space for more backing. I also experienced a problem with the size of the guides on my spey rod. Tooooo smaall for the loop to loop connectors. The replacement guides are now on the rod drying. The tip was to small also, another is on order from the fly shop.
