First attempt at spey casting new
      #30903 - 02/25/00 06:11 PM

Well I had the spey rod out this afternoon. Just casting with it ,no fishing this time. I started with a sink tip and quickly found out that I should start practicing with a floating line.

This style of casting is not as easy as the guys in videos make it look......haha

I can see how a big rod can really be a work out. I was able to get a couple of good casts. Not sure how I managed but was pretty neat when it worked. I could sense I was over working my self and underworking my rod. The timing of the casts needs to be precise to make it all come together.

I might even want to practice with a lighter rod to get the timing down, before a I kill myself with the big stick......hehe

So if you see somebody tied in knots with a fly line stop and say hello

Marty: What line and rod were you using? Any secret casts worth sharing?

If you want to try a light rod I like the 7136 with the RIO midspey. Seems to be a nice match for some of the smaller systems and fish. Could be a little too light for the bruiser nates you guys are dealing with. [Wink]

Marty,

Try a heavier line weight when starting out (even two sizes is not too much). When I began, I realized that I wasn't using enough line length to properly load the rod and yet I couldn't handle more length at that time. My sence was exactely as yours - I felt I was working harder than the rod. [Smile]

I would try a heavier line but the spey set up is already a 11 wt!!! It really is to much rod for me. Got two or 3 gloomis spey blanks around here so I will get one of them in action sooner or later. Then again I may have to try the new Rainshadow spey rods..

Heh Heh, I have enough trouble with a one-handed rod...too many bad casting habits from being self-taught, I guess! I would surely lasso myself if I tried any of that fancy euro-casting!

Maybe we can fly fish the next time I come up...
