Buy lots of stuff for it to chew on, and only let it chew its own stuff. Labs are awesome bird dogs as well as companions. Teach them to come, sit, stay and the rest will fall into place. Spend 15 minutes a day EVERY day working with the pup, and you are in there.

My wife gave me a lab pup for our wedding present. We spent the next 12 years hunting together. The best hunting buddy ever (when she wasn't eating my donuts).

Now I have a springer and she is also a great dog, but she is no lab.

Congrats on the new buddy! Looks like a lively one and I'm looking forward to hearing the puppy stories. Most damage my 12yr. Choc did was a brand new, never worn pair of Cabelas goretex gloves came up missing one fingertip. Gotta love them Lab puppies! Bill

Oh, I forgot, crate train 'em right away. The easiest way to potty train a dog bar none. Plus it makes taking trips easy too...

That's a little sweety John...what did you name it?

I fully agree with the suggestion to provide plenty of chewables from the start. I often go to Costco where they sell big bags [10 or so to the bag] of the large rawhide bones for a great price. Presentation of a new bone to my dog is like a gift for his good behavior. He then takes it to my lounge chair where I sit with him and hold the bone while he starts working it over. In a very short time he is ready to go off on his own with his bone...that has been the ritual/ceremony since he was a pup. I haven't had a problem with my dog for 5 years and don't expect any issues.

Sure they did John. I always suspected you were on the naive side. Whenever I go out and get a puppy, I claim it's for Caveman too, but he's not so easily fooled.

Look at the face. No good woman could resist IMO. I bet they are hugging, petting and spoiling him/her when you aren't around.

Wow what a cutey.

They are awesome dogs. Start training now. Sit, and stay are the #1 thing to learn for a duck dog. Teach him to sit anywhere, in water, on a bucket, on a 2x4 bench, and you will be happy you did. Just get a book from Amazon and start training him, if you follow about 30% of a book you will probably have a dog about 90% better than most in the marsh.

Our first lab was our best hunter, and I basically did about 10 minutes a day when he was a pup, but he also spent way more time finding duck wings (hidden in holes, deep brush, brambles, under rocks in the creek, on high branches) than the current dog. I think it really enforced the willingness not to quit on retrieves. Some days they will amaze you out there, others they will embarass you, just like your own kids.

What a GREAT surprise. That's a good looking pup. Is it male or female ?

When the pup is young, keep training sessions to say ten minutes. Pups are like children and their attention span is short. Basis obedidence to start. Sit, stay, come, etc.
I always liked to finish a training session on a positive as opposed to getting frustrated and quitting.

My training method is simple: CRAP (This works for children too )

C = consistency. Be consistant with your commands and make sure they do it.

R = Repetition. Example: I used to make my shorthair stay and walk away for a length of time. If he moved, I'd bring him back to the exact spot where I told her to stay and do it again. and again and again until she got to where she wouldn't budge. Never be afraid to make them do even the basics even when they are older.

A= Association They need to associate what you are asking them to do.

P= Praise ALWAYS praise them when they do it correctly. Remember, dogs want to please their master.

I'm of the opinion that the dog MUST obey. There is nothing worse than a dog that does not listen. I got my female to where she could be chasing a cat, I'd tell her to whoa and she'd hit the skids. Trust me, it took a lot of man hours.
Basically you get out of what you put into it.

One final thing. Kids can confuse a dog. They tell them to sit, stay, come in one sentance sometimes. I explained to my kids that they needed to give the dog one command at a time. It didn't always work ::D

Anyways, good luck and looking forward to see a picture of it's first duck.

Thanks guys.....he's a chewer...toes, books...chew toys....anyone got any favorite toys that dogs can't resist....He's nibbling on a pigs ear now, really don't like rawhides...
I've had a lab before, just never trainer her to hunt. She had some natural instincts and a great nose...he seems to also. He's 11 weeks old now and he's sitting, staying(short term), come is a work in progress. He can fetch already, seems to have a pretty soft mouth. Crate training as we speak.
Anyone have some spare duck wings, shoot some my way. Looking forward to many days afield and at home with LB...my youngest girl(17) named her Little Bear...I'm not opposed to the name, just to hard to say...so we call him LB for short.....
More to come, i'm sure....lol!!!!

AM, No woman could resist that face....minutes before I left for elk camp...my oldest daughter showed up with my oldest two grandboys, chocolate lab in tow. He was sooooo cute! She does her homework and told my wife that there was one left, mine. Pretty cool to get a new pup. My boxer(Brutus) is way jealous but I spend time with him seperately. He's the best dog I've ever owned...my yellow lab was a close second. Hopefully LB will be right there, so far other than the first few nights racket(lonely), he's doing okay. Nothing like Southforks lab, thank God.
So, in essence you're right....my daughter is a sucker for dogs, and my wifes a sucker for me....i'm glad she did it!

Good looking dog John!

For toys, I suggest things like the Kongs and firehoses- both very sturdy.

One toy my lab hasn't tired of, and she hasn't been able to destroy, is a blue silicone "jack" shaped kong type thing...has holes for treats, and it bounces like it's alive (or possessed). She'll worry it and throw it up in the air for quite a while.

Mine had no rope...came in different sizes too.

We've got a 8mo old black lab and she finally met her match, but not for a lack of trying. We had to upgrade to the 'Extreme' KONG ball - not a scratch and she loves chasing the thing, bounces like a football. http://www.kongcompany.com/worlds_best.html

I'm having an easier time training the pooch than the girlfriend. It was her dog before we met, trying to reverse a lot of bad habits that she developed b/c owner wasn't enforcing behavior. She's coming around, definitely turned into my dog now

Same here CoHo

MM a check cord works well on teaching them to come. Get your self a length or rope with a snap on it. He can drag it around. That will give the the added reach in case he's being a knothead and doesn't want to listen. You can simply reel him in with it

Yeah, now that the leaves have fallen off I can see the river again. I just re-arranged a morning meeting tomorrow so that I can go to the river for a while in the AM (until about 10). I'll have my shotgun, but be fishing, there is one spot where I might get some wings for you.

I'm going to give you some slightly contrary advice MM. When it comes to toys, indestructable may not help a chewer. Every dog we've ever had learned early that whatever is theirs, is theirs to do with as they see fit. I always include toys that can be shredded and destroyed on purpose. We used a basket for all our dogs with a dozen or so toys in it so they could grab whichever suited them at the time. Teach your pup that he can have anything in the basket that is his, and if he wants to ruin it, it's OK. (sure, somebody has a mess to clean, but better to have that than ruined furniture or shoes!) If he goes after something that he's not allowed, he gets sternly scolded, has the item taken away, and led to his "basket" of goodies.

In all these years, this has worked for us. It even works on our birds.

Does not work so well on grandkids though!
