Chum on the fly
      #309381 - 11/16/07 02:31 PM

I'm interested in trying to catch chum on the fly this year. I'll be fishing south sound river that is usually fairly brown stained and peaks around the end of December. Aside from rods/reels/line, any suggestions regarding color and patterns.

Thanks,

Foxtrotter

They like bright greens and chartreuse. Look on the internet for the recipe for a Chum Candy fly, works for me at Hoodsport a few time years ago.

Chartreuse or hot pink bunny leeches weighted appropriatley for the water you are fishing. If it is fast water, lead wrap and dumbell eyes are the ticket.

Try purples too. Or something with the Peachy king color in it. I hook more chums on these colors than anything. Basically go fishing for steelhead. Thats what I always catch em on, Sounds crazy, but true.

based on the chum fishing Ive done, fly fishing should work well. On the puyallup they range from deep water to shallow riffle water. The water should be clearing by now.

The green is a no brainer.

I would recommend a 4 foot leader and at least 15 # Have plenty of backing and make sure you have a very good knot, unless you want to buy a new flyline. I would use a floating line in most water. Use a longer lead with weighted fly for deeper water, before you switch to a sinking line.

Spivey,
I fish them in Britsh Columbia and Alaska primarily. In BC, the Fraser tributaries. In AK, lots of of places. I've caught them in 3 feet of water to 15-20'. Rig accordingly. I prefer floating or intemediate sink lines with heavy flies and 10 foot leaders in about 6 to 10 feet of water. I'll use whatever works though.

With the Chumlords, wait till you line is ripping before you set the hook. You'll get lots of line bumps, and setting the hook then means snagged fish. You do not want to be snagged up to a chum's arse. They will be breaking some gear...

Spivey, it is less than a half hour drive from monte to Kennedy creek. Kennedy is no secret, so you will have a lot of company. You will also see a lot of fish.

I know there are 3 or 4 good chum fisheries peaking about now up there. Nisqually, Hoodsport (it might be over by now), Skagit, to name a few...

Here is one of my more memorable chumlords, caught on a rod I built, on a fly I tied, in BC with Pez and another great friend. What a great trip!

Are there any safe bets if a guy was going to fly to SeaTac, rent a car and maybe tie into a few in a long weekend?

I've been toying with that idea. I was wondering what rivers and what times of year. I know, it's a lot to ask, but it's chums. Not like I am asking for anyone's favorite steelhead or king run.

I'd think Nisqually or better yet go to B.C. and fish the Stave River. 3 million fish a year return to a 4 mile long river. You might luck in to one. It is about 4 hours, maybe 5 at most from Sea-Tac.

Thanks Joe,

I tried B.C., remember? Nisqually sounds interesting. The logistics would be ridiculously easy. Boise to SeaTac friday after work, fish the weekend, home Sunday evening.

Nisqually is usually a good bet. If you are new to the river, be careful where you fish and park. Ft. Lewis Army reservation encompasses most of the lower river. The MP's are more than delighted to greet you if fishing in the wrong spot.

I like to use purple an chartruese combos for Chum. They like purple about as much as chart, and that way I have both and contrast. sink tio to mathc water, and swing.

Good grief Joe....I don't think that chum was interested in your fly at all. Probably saw that hidious tie-dye shirt and wanted to kick your hippie a$$.
