Where do you draw the line in your fly fishing. Is indicator nymphing still fly fishing? How about casting small spoons with your fly rod? With the invention of more creative materials and techniques what is truly considered fly fishing?

Marty, I personally think that it's all good as long as there's flyline, not mono, on the reel. After all, flyrods were designed to cast tiny, nearly weightless lures that can't easily be fished otherwise, by casting the LINE, not the LURE. I think when you don't have flyline, you aren't flyfishing. If a tiny spoon is what it takes to get the job done, that's what I'll use , and never feel guilty. Small spinners and plugs, on the other hand, are probably easier and more effectively fished with an ultra-light rig. Just my opinion (which, with a buck-fifty will get a cup of Starbucks coffee ) Greg

That would be straight black small coffee right? I use the regulations as my guideline in a selective fishery. The "Classic fly fishing" Is not a reality in todays fishing styles. Mono is ok for backing and I agree with the fly line doing the work it is fly fishing.

Marty, after 17 years in Uncle Sam's employ, STRONG, straight, and black is the only coffee for me . Of course, when I mentioned tiny spoons I mean where the regs allow it (providing you have enough legal education to decipher the damn things! Heck, back home the only illegal fishing methods involve rifles and/or dynamite...come to think of it, you can probably get a special handicapped permit for those, too! Greg

mix in special interest groups and nobody at the meeting to argue against rule changes and you get attorney style regs. Its going to get worse after this year since it is a major rule change year...yikes

I fish with any type of fly. I have enough trouble catching fish using all flies, so I wouldn't want to limit myself to just dry flies I use strike indicators and nymphs. For steelhead fly fishing I've got a lot of terminal tackle type stuff on my line. I don't use spoons or spinners on a fly rod however. If I were going to use spoons I would just use my spinning rod.~ Dr Pepper

Ah Dr Pepper you might want to consider carrying a couple small dicknite spoons. You can't cast them very well with even spinning gear but you sure can with a fly rod. Throw a feather on the hook if it makes you feel good
