Does anyone know how to tie those great looking tapered nymph bodies without having to use lead wire?

Stew
There are a bunch of great looking nymph bodies. Some are done with flat latex, dubbing material, or a vinyl thread. If you could be more exact in the description I am sure we can help you out.

Stew the tapered body is done with flat latex and a permanent marker is used to color it. Its easier to color it before you wrap it. You might even try coloring a wide rubber band to save some money.

I stand corrected..the way he ties his stone flies is with a dubbing material. Here is a link on the exact method. You could substitute more dubbing in place of the lead to gain the same effect.

Easier said than done Marty. I know you can flatten lead wire and get the effect but casting a weighted fly is clumsy and dangerous.

The weight underbody can be ignored and the fly can still tied the same way. Dubbing can be tapered on the tread or it can just be wrapped more to cause a tapered build up. The underbody can also be built up with a string material. Stop by your local fly shop and have them show you. A sparsely tied fly on a heavy wire hook will produce a fast sinking effect with out the use of a lead body.
