Looking for some added challenge in catching salmon..My question is, what kind of line would any of you reccomend? It would be fall kings and silvers in a river that usually has pretty clear water. This river has been a huge producer for me the last couple of years, so I figure I stand a good chance of learning with a really good chance of hooking up.
I not sure as to what i need exactly, floating, sinking weight forward ect...? Any suggestions on lines, rods, or reels would be greatly appreciated..
Also do any of you know a class or workshop on tying steelhead and salmon flies?

I'm not an expert by any means, so take this with a grain of salt...but I'd suggest at least an 8 wt. rod. You'll need a good reel, with a decent drag, and one that will hold your line and at least 150 yds. of backing. As far as lines go, a WF sink-tip (type IV or type VI) should be a good all-round compromise, unless you want to spend the bucks (or time to build one) on a multi-head setup. I built one, but can't seem to get it to cast to suit me, so I recently bought a plain old sink-tip for myself. Brand names for all these are really a personal choice, shop around and buy what suits you. I think the Morning Hatch in Tacoma offers classes.

No Prob., one more thing...if you know how to wrap your own rods, Marty can get you a good deal on a Loomis GL3 9' 8 wt. blank...I built one and it is sweet! These are the last of the made in USA Loomis blanks, too.

Sounds good so far...how about a medium sink rate 10-12' tip. zzzzzzziiiiiiiinnnnngggg I still have a couple of those gl3's left.

Say if someone (hint: me) was to be interested in one of those blanks, would the seller be willing to make the rod for an additional fee?
The reason being is that I have a Gl3 baitcaster, and I love it..But if you don't want the additional work, how tough is it to learn to make my own rod, sounds rather tough, but I think that the satisfaction of catching a fish on a rod that I put together would be outstanding. Also price?

$85 for the blank..not enough time for me to tie my own. Not to difficult to learn to tie them, actually easy to do if you have the time and desire to do it. Probably quite a few guys that would be willig to do your tie job for a couple bucks.

any of you guys use that clear mono intermiadiate striper line, its made for cold saltwater, its supposed to be the real deal, gonna put it on my new 7wt. Ben

I say get an 8wt also. For a line get a Scientific Anglers Air Cell floating line. Then you can have a sink tip made at a flyshop. I'd get a 6' sink tip and a 12'. This is what I have on my 8wt and it casts sweet. The front of the SA line is short and heavy making it excellent for salmon/steelhead. I don't think it would cost more than $35 for this setup and it is nice. Just my $.02.

I'm not sure because I've never tried the orvis wonderline. I've tried the Cortland 444. The 444 is better for dry flies and trout fishing because the front of the line is longer. I don't know how to explain it, but the 444 just seems to go higher in the air. Better for dry flies, but not for salmon/steelhead. The SA just feels like it has more weight to it and handles lead and heavy flies better. Go to a flyshop with your rod and see if they will let you try different lines. Don't just buy the most expensive, buy what casts the best. You also might want to use a 9wt line on an 8wt rod. Depends on the rod though.
