Actually, once you get the hang of the spey, you won't be doing as much casting. It is a heavier rod, but you'll be able to do more mending and keep th llie in the water longer. I do have aword of advice, thouuh I'm still getting the hang of it myself. Do a reverse spey. Insstead of fishing right handed, fish left handed. Hold the rod loose and let te rod do te work. Ii've found, tehharder you try to throw a spey, the shorter the cast. The more you relax and just flow with the od the better casts you'll get. Iit seemed when i" screw around I'd nail these 70-95' casts with no problem. But when I'd try an do i, I'd go maybe 40'. But, you try using your bad hand you'll see a diference. You're uncordinated hand will usualy force you to go slower and steady. The rod will do the work and you'll increase your throwig distance, and you'll see a consistant length iin your throws.

I am no spey expert by any means. I could cast a little but the rod was just to big/heavy for me to use properly for very long. I have some of the lighter spey rods (see the rod kits forum) I need to tie up so I can enjoy the casting part more. All part of my learning curve. Thanks for the tip.
Been meaning to take one of Daves spey classes (Waters West Fly shop).

Marty at Quality Flyfishing there is an old steelheader in there named Gary. If you give him $20 I'm sure he would teach you all you need to know about spey casting. He showed me how to cast a spey rod. It didn't take long and I could cast the whole line pretty easy.

Thanks for the info...I am in no hurry to run off with my spey rod... I have some mega drift fishing I need to take care of first. Maybe this summer/fall I will grab the spey again.
