I was directed to this area of the site for a question about the Alsea. I am looking to take my father in law on a fishing trip around Christmas. He used to fish the North Fork as a kid, but can't remember specific banks he fished from. I have heard that Barkley Breaks(?) is a good area. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!

Problem with the river is the limited about of 'public/bank access.' Lower river is (to a very large degree) a boat show. The upper river tends to compact the fishing as using a boat is pretty much out of the question (size/flow) of the river.

Thanks. Maybe we'll stick with the Sandy.

Im gonna have to dissagree with fredevans, Having fished this river a ton, there is alot of public access on the north fork, there is some good water below the hatchery, but it gets crowded, and there is also good acccess down stream above and below clemens park, also down lower there are a ton of pullouts for bankies, yes there is alot of boat pressure, but the alsea has alot of bank access, and in my opinion is a better river to fish around christmas(sandy doesnt turn on till late jan-early Feb for winters now)

LOVE the alsea. This is the river that I landed my first winter steelhead (after trying six other days!). It didnt hurt that it was very large either. Cant wait to get out there again this winter.

It's pretty early for the Sandy. The Alsea or the Siletz should be fising better than the Sandy by then.

Thanks to all of you. Looks like I am going to be heading down there later this month. I'll give those spots a try, blood. I've been able to hook up with a guy that knows the area, and the river.
Good luck to you all.

Will there be good numbers of winter steelhead around Christmas? Last year I didn't fish the alsea until February.

New year day was always my 'target,' but I only fished the upper river. COLD! Jeezze Louise That said (just below the hatchery) is the only place I've had a winter take a full float dry fly.
Took 6 or 7 runs over his nose (I could see the fish) ... fellow come up ... drifted back ... settled down on the bottom again ....
Finally .... whole thing from that part took a couple of minutes before he won, I lost.
