Mechanic Help Needed! new
      #310446 - 11/26/07 08:02 PM

93 Camry 4 cylinder....wife started it inthe morning to warmup and defrost. 15 minutes later she went out to take off and it had quit running....it wouldn't start even though it had cranked over. I tried cranking it over on a shop charging unit later and nothing. Checked and all 4 plugs had good spark and there was fuel supply on the engine side of the fuel filter. Compression seemed to suck though. Okay I am thinking timing belt is broke. Haul it down to the local mechanic who is pretty damn good. He checks the timing belt....not broke and hasn't slipped....no teeth worn or knocked off either gear. Timing is 180 degrees out. Checked compression and all 4 cylinders are at 30 psi. Did a bleed down check also....same thing. Rings seem fine. This is a non-interrupting engine so none of the valves should or could be bent as they are mechanically not able to be reached by the pistons. Overhead cam looked damn near new and the plugs looked fine also. What the heck could it be?

Check the woodruff key on the crank gear. Only thing I can think of short of a broken crank.

180deg out??? Steve might be right, the only thing I can think of that'll give you that low of compression...should be over 100, right?

not sure about your car but some of those older toyota's have individual lobes mounted on a shaft as a camshaft instead of a solid 1 piece like most older american rigs
every so often they will go bad and just rotate on the shaft and the timing belts appear fine but the car won't run(obviously)
been there did that got the t-shirt
but i'd have a real good look at the crank first as has been suggested

I'd take a close look at the timing belt, all the way around. I've seen them shear the teeth off the belt and it would only have to be a small area to let the crank spin out of time.
Belt stretch/ bad tensioner

while you're in there check the pulley mounting. If it's a press fit it could slip.

Hope you get it figured out and fixed quickly and cheap.

After much thought I told the mechanic to pull the distributer and check it out. Theres a little pin that sometimes will break. Nope everything was fine. He put it back in and just for the heck of it checked compression and lo and behold a miracle...we had perfect compression! He's baffled and so am I....suspect that the belt did slip a couple teeth. Final cost was $260....he said if it happens again he'll work on it for free as he'd like to know what the heck the problem actually was.
