8-2 report..... IT'S COLD! new
      #312225 - 12/09/07 06:20 PM

Thomas and I headed out to play around on the sound today. It was cold when we started out and things only got more fun from there. We had to re-do a downrigger line, our bait cutting knife broke, and it snowed on us.

But hey, we didn't have to clean any fish!

Nice! Sounds like fun. We went out on Saturday and almost had the same downrigger debacle. There was a fray right where the ball attached and we luckily noticed it before it broke. We caught two sub-legals. Both were right at 20 inches. Close but no cigar. I'm still waiting for the pics from my friend's camera - will post as soon as I get them.

We asked the checker if she'd seen any fish, she said 9 were brought in but two were ILLEGAL. Nates. She said that she didn't write them a ticket but would remember them and make sure they didn't do it again. Hmmm.

Oh yeah, I can definitely vouch for the coldness. Brrrrr.

bacota you can't bring those fish past the gunnel if you have to release them....no biggy from me as I consider the rule to be without any merit. Also you are asking for a nasty experience from a seal or worse a sealion reaching over the side like that to pick up a fish.

The first pic I was releasing the fish - I only had my hand near the water for a second or two, but I didn't know that about seals/sealions. I'll make sure to not do that next time! As for not bringing them beyond the gunnel, how do you measure a clipped fish to see if it's long enough without bringing it onboard? I definitely don't want to be breaking any rules. Thanks for the heads-up!

Use a permanent black marker to mark your gunnel with the appropiate measurements. It's legal to bring the fish to the gunnel but no further than that unless it is a keeper. Make sure you put marks on both the starboard and port gunnels. You really haven't experienced salmon fishing until you've had a 600 pound sealion take your salmon out of your hands.

Thanks for the report. In 8-2 I like Elger Bay, Baby Island and Oly's Hole. These spots are usually good in Dec and Jan but after that the fish seem to move back down to Possession, Jeff Head etc. I've fished those spots since the early 80's. Johns Sptg Goods has a fishing journal and the current edition is about that area.

Good idea on the permanent marker Gooose, that's gonna happen this weekend for sure. As long as I can come out of the battle relatively unscathed, I look forward to earning my Sea Lion stripes.

Barchaser - sweet link! Yet another site to keep me entertained at work. And thanks for the suggestions on spots to try - this is my first year with a boat and no matter how much I read about this stuff, I still feel like I don't have a clue what I'm doing. I'm Ross Perot (all ears).

I have used black sharpie's to mark my boat for sturgeon on the lower Columbia, works great!

Another idea is using electrical tape. It is not permanent and when the state change size restrictions, you can change it.
