Hideous tying experiments new
      #311386 - 12/04/07 12:04 AM

For some reason nasty weather seems to bring out tying ideas. I took a break from organizing my tying stuff to whip out some articulated leeches in the slim hope of swinging flies in the near future. Anyway, I was looking at a piece of estaz laying on the desk thinking it might make a killer leech if it could be wrapped the length of an articulated hook pair. Think these might p!ss-off some steel?

In the past I have tied similar rubber-legged-leech patterns in the single hook form that have knocked the snot out of big east-side bows. No reason why you couldn't get a steelie to snap at one. Good looking flies. Did you use mono to connect both of the hooks?

Nice and intruder style otis bug/carpet bagger, now that I am back to the tying bench after a 8 month sabbatical may have to try these, probably good for bass too.

Thanks guys. I may have had an otis bug in the back of my mind when I thought of this. I used doubled 30# spectra (Tuff line) to connect the hooks. I also found that pretying the legs on the "gap" section, then coating it with Pliobond and overwrapping the estaz over the braid works much better than trying to wrap the braid with thread and estaz (if that make any sense). I'll post a recipe when I get a chance.

BTW, I did tie some up in purple, ... and rusty orange and chartruese (thinking springers, summers, and bass!).

Ermmmm.... Hal, I'm sitting on the bank of the Chetco River (Brookings, Or and obviously in the MH given I'm typing on the internet. Would you like to send off ... oh say ... a dozen of those to me express mail? And I'd add to SF a few of yours.

Think of me as your 'test bench.'

Did have a good laugh (at my expense) a couple of days back. Hooked/released a nice Nate just above the RV park. Fly? An
Irish Prawn pattern sent to me by a fellow in the UK. Sooo .. to catch a fish I have to have someone 6-8 thousand miles away ..... you get the picture and the reason for the chuckle.

Here's the latest versions, some tied larger, with lead-eyes, and in different colors.

Had to tie one in purple. I'm thinking the orange and chartruese have salmon potential, and the rusty brown looks bassy.

Silverfly you are killing me! I can think of quite a few places where those would be killa under a dink float. Can you do a pink and orange version?

My local largemouths will love the bottom 3. Better to fish though with some weed guards on them. Try those for big brown trout at night on a river too.

Nothing wrong with that. I will probably tie up a few unweighted (or maybe floating?... hmm) versions just for drift fishing. I love to fly-fish but it's too damn much work to dredge a deep hole with fly gear (if at all).

Glad you like em. The orange one in the upper left is tied with "salmon" estaz and hot pink rubber legs. Were you thinking of mixing colors of estaz, - like maybe pink on the rear hook and the rest orange? (sounds good!).

I think that can be arranged. Just promise me you won't use them for flossing at Blue Creek

BG, you must be a carp fisherman at heart, because these flies will be money for carp. I love 'em. Just remember to use about 2X.
