Looking for a new dog
      #313087 - 12/15/07 11:30 AM

We're looking for a new dog, and are looking for suggestions, referrals, etc. We're not exclusively looking for one from either breeders or rescues, but want to get the right dog for our family. Budget is of course a concern. My current job contract ends Monday, and I don't have anything locked in yet.

We sadly had to have our previous dog put down last summer (Not getting into it here) and now it's time to add a new one or two to the family.
My wife really likes the Labradoodles and Golden Doodles, and we've done a lot of reading about a lot of breeds, traits, temperaments, etc.

We have family coming for Christmas, bringing a high-strung little Italian Greyhound, so this is no time to have two dogs in the house. (Family drama - don't ask)

Whatever we get, will have to be after Christmas. I'm open to all suggestions, but what we're looking for for the first dog (plan on at least one more later this yr) is a house/yard dog. Not a little girlie dog, but not too big/strong. The last one was 90+ lbs solid muscle and scared too many of my wife's piano students.

Not specifically looking for a birding dog, as I don't hunt (yet) and don't know enough about training for that anyway. I'll get one for myself when the time comes.

Shedding/dander issues are a concern, as my wife has allergies/asthma (which is why she's fallen in lve with the 'doodles')

Did I miss anything? Oh yeah, no Pits, Staffordshires, etc.

Thanks Greg - There's always lots of dogs for sale. That's never a problem. The challenge is finding just the right fit for out family.

Be very careful about where you get the dog. I would stay with a well known breeder with a history or go to the shelter. So much depends on the training you provide. Our last wo dogs came from the shelter. Both were puppies. I went almost daily, sometimes two times, checking the new dogs. Puppies go quickly. We ended with a boarder collie mix and a rhodesian ridgeback mix.

My wife's Aunt got one of those doodle things. They love it in manay ways. The bigest draw for me is the shedding thing. Next dog will not shed. That could be hard finding at the shelter. Guess I need to start saving for the $900+ for a dog. One less fly rod I can buy this season

I have 2 english bulldogs and love them. They are the most tame and gentle dogs Ive ever had. Not to hyper or annoying.
Great dogs. I can't say enough good things about the breed.

Shaun.

Hunting bred springers are great pets that aren't that high maintenance. Other than that, pugs are great pets.

Yeah Jim, Brittany's are great looking dogs, so it's good to hear they're not high maintenance. What about shedding?

We are looking at an F2 cross Labradoodle in Gig Harbor on Thursday (Owner got him from a breeder but cannot spend enough time with him).
Pugs are out; would be too hard not to laugh at everytime I see it.

I have a Brittany, but I wasn't recommending them. I was recommending Springer Spaniels. Britts are usually very high energy. Springers want to naturally stay pretty close. Neither really sheds much unless you got a long coated show springer. You do have the twice a year shedding like many breeds.

If the Labradoodle in Gig H. does not work out, can you let me know. That is one breed we are loking at getting.

Thanks!
