Today I got an adult banded Mallard drake, a big northern. What a pretty duck! I called it in to the 800 number on the band. The gal didn't have the history on the band, but said that info will be mailed to me soon. Curious where he came from. Bill

Cool! I got one last year, and got the data off of their website immediately.
Here's the link [url] http://www.reportband.gov/
Select "duck" from the drop down menu.

A bufflehead from Minnesota? How weird is that?
I've never got a band, except for once. I was looking at an old picture of me when I was about 15. I was holding a duck in my hand with a band on it. I must have just chucked the bird in the garbage without ever noticing. How sad.

I shot a banded Chukar a few years ago in the Yakima Canyon. Called it in and it had been banded the year before in Nevada. Sounds like they were trying to spur the Washington population a bit. Haven't caught up with any banded waterfowl yet, but Dogfish almost had a nice neck banded goose a while back. Could have read the numbers we were so close, but couldn't get a shot off in time.

I could have shot it, but it was Sunday and we had the Dusky Goose regs in effect at that time. No shootin' 'da geeses on Sunday.

I just started getting into duck hunting this year. I shot a banded drake mallard near Toppenish opening day. It was one of four banded mallards that we shot in two days. Each of us ended up with a band.
I've talked to many duck hunters and everyone gets excited when speaking of banded birds. Why is shooting a banded duck considered such a big deal when it is nothing more than pure luck? Is it because there are no record books for size of ducks?

My guess is that it's simply the opportunity to know something about the animal's past after you killed the little sumbitch.
