Fir Island Snow Goose Hunt new
      #312776 - 12/13/07 01:20 PM

Got drawn for the special snow goose hunt on Fir Island Dec 10 – 15 field 11A. My son and his buddy were wound up and ready to go Monday morning. Got to our field and got the deeks set up and waited. Didn’t see any snows all morning except for a few flocks way off in the distance. I figured maybe the weather discouraged the flocks from flying very far inland. Decided to hold off on hunting Tuesday because the weather looked the same as Monday’s weather. We packed the deeks up and left them in our field until Wednesday morning, god I hate starting an adventure like that.
Later Monday evening I received a call from Dave Huddle asking if I’d like to change fields, seems as though someone got drawn but failed to take up the states offer on the quality hunt. Dave said there were 5000 to 9000 geese setting on the very field he was offering up to me. Poor guys I guess they didn’t know what they were missing. Drove back up Tuesday afternoon, retrieved our deeks and then drove over to our new area. Talk about getting all warm and giddy, when we pulled up there were several thousand geese doing what geese do when they hang out!
Wednesday morning we get there set up our spread and wait, all of 10 minuets that is. First flight 2 geese, 2nd flight 30 minuets later 4 geese, 3rd flight 45 minuets later 4 geese. The main part of the flock setteled down just West of where we had set up so now it’s a waiting game. 1.5 hours later they started to come back to us, 2 more birds down and were are done for the day. I’ll post pics when I get them. What a great day, I hoping Friday and Saturday are the same!

Was there again today, got 8 between three of us. We should of had our limits but we got a late start so we were not ready at the start of hunting hours. Still a great day, love to see my 18 yo knock the crap out of those birds, I guess the beneille nova he got for his 18th was a good investment.

A side report on Fir Island....apparently a group of hunters had a close encounter with a flock of Snows next to a parking area for one of the hunt fields....one nice sized Snow hit by shot probably died upon impact with the windshield of a hunters truck in the parking lot. I'd call it a tie...Hunter 1 vs Goose 1.

If your lucky enough to get drawn you can take 3 others with you. I'm guessing the goose vs truck was right off the dike. There is a place you can pull into right off the dike and try to plug geese coming off the open water. Guess you need to watch where they fall!

The kid was one happy camper, thats what makes life so great!

One for the road, it was funny cause we had a couple of bird watchers come by and give us the evil eye!

Awesome pics. That sounds like so much fun. How do they rate as table fare?

As an aside to your second part about the bird watchers. My buds and I were hunting a spot on the sound, but we had to put in along a pretty major highway. We were taking pics back at the car, and a guy pulled in and saw the dead birds. Apparently, he was a bird lover because he said "What did you do?" in this really whiny kind of voice, then he started gently weeping and saying over and over "What did you do, what did you do, what did you do?" It was a weird moment.

One of my dumbsh!t friends goes over and tells him, "We went hunting, and don't worry I'm sure you'll get over this eventually."

What a f'n pu$$y....that makes me sik. You should have told taht guy to grow a pair of nuts and remember where his chicken mcnuggets come from.

My experience with eating those Fir Island geese is that they are really good, especially the blues....more tender. Would you agree Lifeisgreat?

They have a really mild flavor to them, their diet is mostly winter cover crops, wheat and rye grasses. I'm going to have mine turned into pepperoni sticks. There's a local butcher that does a great job on fowl. Ya the folks that gave us the evil eye slowed way down and shook their heads as they passed. Funny thing we are helping the geese cause there is an over population right now according to the fish & game people. I guess they havent had bad weather in their nesting grounds for a few years now so the flock size is really increasing. They will end up damaging their own nesting area because of the population increase. Here's a link to the states website. Snows

that was the funniest most well deserving incident I have seen in a long time!
Those knuckle draggers down there put a bad name towards hunting in general.

I heard last week there was a fistticuff down there with 5-6 sheriffs responding..

A handful of idiots decided to start blasting away from the same parking lot and across the access road. A former USFWS employee decided to intercede and it got nasty.
