Anyone fish one of these? I would like to hear any feedback on this rod, pros/cons, etc. I found it for cheap at the Sportsmans warehouse in Boise. Never owned a higher end rod before. It feels nice in my hand and is lighter than the 8 wt I use.

BUT .....not for everyone. A very stiff rod, so it's a personal choice on what you like to cast .... or not. I gave my 8wt away as it was one of the few spey rods that just made me shake my head.

Fred, I have heard the Loomis spey rods are tough to cast. I've always loves fast fly rods, the faster the better. Not so with the 2 hander. Mine's a med-fast, and it suits me.
One handers IMO you can't have a rod that's too fast.

my new 9 wt is a 9 foot med fast action, but I prefer a fast rod too. Have not yet got into spey rods but I looked at a 17 footer at Cabelas yesterday. Wow.

I had an GL3 8 wt. for light saltwater and loved it. Alot of the guys I knew had higher end (G. Loomis GLX & Sage) rods but when they used mine with a Ross Gunnison G4 on it, they thought it felt real good. Cast well in the coastal "breeze" too.

Sorry Mojo, missed your post.
That said, it's a 'caster's rod' not what I'd pick for a fishing tool.

Hocked the Loomis the other. Turned out not to be a great match for me. I'm back to Redington rods. I bought the RS4 - sweeeeet!

Exactly the same for me; one and only spey rod a was 'happy' to be done with. Also have a Redington spey, which one did you get (line weight)? Fred

Fred,
I got the 9 wt. I almost bumped to a 10 wt. but I don't have an 8 wt. anymore and a 10 would be too much for steelhead I think. With a 9 I can still fish steel comfortably (the Redington RS4 9wt casts like its an 8, but has the beef of about a 10 IMO)and not be too shy to cast at nooks. Someday I'll get a spey rod. It would be quite useful on the Lower Deschutes. Not yet though. I plan to break in the new 9 wt. in the next couple weeks, maybe North Santiam or Rogue. The real test will be from the beaches of Costa Rica in Aug. How heavy a spey rod do you use for steelhead?

Good choice, mines the 6/7. A 10 wt is over kill for anything but King Salmon fishing or using 'full sinking lines.' There you do need 'ommph' in your rod.
Fred
Edit: forgot to add. If it's not too long a drive, think the Rogue. We've just had another good shot of fish move through the Rogue River, Oregon part of the river. Fish should be over Gold Ray in a few days into the upper river.

The Loomis FR1089 is a very nice rod. I should of went that way instead of the 9 ft 9 in models, still have all the beef and the extra length just wears you out on multi-day trips.
