Jig and flyrod
      #315769 - 01/04/08 10:11 PM

I was watching this web episode online:
Fishing Videos
and if you scroll down they have a video where the dude uses a micro jig on a fly rod...
My question... Have any of you guys tried this with success

Greg, this really isn't anything new. Alot of the original steelhead jigs were tied with heavy barbell eyes instead of a poured jighead (I know alot of my original jigs were a mixture of both). A few of my hardcore down and dirty flies are downturned eyed hooks with barbell eyes tied to them. Causes them to turn over. Alot of other guys have done the same thing. Including tying them extra small. Most of those same guys (myself included) will use a strike indicator on them. Hence, you have a jig/float combo on the fly rod. I remember Les Johnson once saying his friend (could've been himself actually) used this combo for years on a flyrod. Well before the jig for steelhead idea came about. Do believe they tied the flies on a mustad bait hook (which is a heavy jig hook for bass I do believe).

To answer your question though on my own end. Yes, it works quite well for both winter and summer run steelhead and all salmon. It works great. But nowadays, I prefer to swing the fly. I have fished long enough and have enough gear that I keep things specialized. So when I want to use jig/float, I use my jig rod. When I want to use a fly, I use a simple fly with either floating or sinking line. BUT, will weight a fly accordingly.

The reason I asked mainly is because if you had a floating line it would be easier to mend too

Yes use them even without floats in deep pools and runs when getting down really fast in the many fast short chute type runs we have out here.

Beware Grasshopper, beware. Catch one of those in the back of the head and you're face down in the river.

DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER. Also totally un-cool.

I wacked myself between the shoulder blades with a bunny leech that had big dumbell eyes once, while salmon fishing in BC. It literally dropped me to my knees, and left a welt the size of a golfball right over my spine. OUCH!

someone did that in a pontoon down here and kept on fishing and we felt really bad for him so we told him to come over and we ripped it out for him
