AR 5.56 with a varmint/bull barrel and bipod is a sweet prairie dog eradicator.

I am just looking for a home defense weapon. Most likly the only action it will see is at the gravel pit. Go big or go home right? or should i get something that i know my wife can send ammo down range with if i am not at home.

308 is going to have issues with penetratrion thru walls and doors raising the issue of unwanted collateral injuries to non-targets. 5.56 will still have some of those issues but not as great. 5.56 holes in the house will also be easier than .308 holes to repair after you/she empties a 20 round clip at an unwanted intruder.

Another idea, is 6.8 Remington SPC...80% the power of an .308 with 50% of the recoil.
I have both FAL L1A1 and HK91 chambered .308(7.62 NATO) they're both good rifles...
IMO they're not as accurate as an AR, for what you're wanting todo...I'd go with an M4 in 5.56...
Let's figure out a date for an '08 Steelheader.net Range Day, you can shoot all 3 to help you deside.

For home defense, there is only 1 answer. You will be defending yourself in feet, not yards. There is only one logical choice! A "crowd killer"!
Buy a cheap pump shotgun with a short barrel, for example a Rem 870 Express or a Mossy. Load it up with #4 shot, and it won't have the penetration of a rifle to cause grief in the neighborhood, and just the SOUND of you shucking the action and the size of the hole in the barrel will have most intruders "getting out of Dodge FAST"! And it is deadly at clost range!

.458 SOCOM.
The second bullet from the left.
Think .45-70 in a standard AR platform. They now make frangible bullets for them in .458. 2800 foot pounds of enery. All you would have to do is buy another upper in .223 (5.56x45) and you could have two guns for the price of one and a half.

I spent several years training in CQB and know full well the advantages of a shotgun in "room clearing"
and yes, most of us do think alike

Go big or stay home. If it comes to a fire fight, I apply the same rules as I do to jetted outboards. No such thing as too much. Go as big as your budget allows.

To answer the original q - I'd have to say 5.56 instead of 7.62 - You can carry more/shoot more, and at CQ range, that's probably more of an issue than knock-down energy. Now if you were defending the homestead, or the neighborhood, a la 'Red Dawn', then I'm heavily biased towards the 7.62. If you have someone to help carry the load, go big .50BMG, or .468
For typical urban home defense? My personal choice would be:
A beyond-blindingly-bright flashlight or 3, a well maintained pump 12g shortbarrel pump, with 2 3/4" 'managed-recoil' 00buck loads Managed Recoil
Make sure the stock fit, fore-arm length, and action suit your wife so that it cycles smoothly under stress, and she can get it into a good position without hurting her rotator cuff, or worse. Might even be a good idea to try different loads at CQB distances to become familiar with your system's patterning. Good way to recycle cardboard.
A screw it - just grab any pistol with a caliber that starts with a 4 and keep pulling til BANG turns to click .
For some grins, maybe I can bring some drywall to the SH range day. I wanna see Andy's thunder AR in action.

I think I have made up my mind. I did a re-think of what I want this rifle for....I decided that I dont need it for Close combat (inside the house) thats what I have 1911's for. So I am going to get the POF 308 and really reach out and touch someone. Thanks for all the info.
