I was looking at some new hand cannons last night and on a few of the 1911 pistols were stamped .45 Auto and others had .45ACP. Is there a difference or is it the same cartridge ??

no dumb questions when it comes to weapons. ACP stands for automatic colt pistol. almost all new semi-auto pistols in 45 cal. are 45acp. hope this helps.

I just picked up a .40 S&W for the GF a few weeks back. So.... Being a I didn't want to feel left out, I figures I needed a new shootin iron too.
I was checking out the Springfield Armory XD series too. Those are pretty sweet guns. I'm a little limited in what I can buy being as I'm a southpaw.

Same caliber. .451 Detonics and .45 GAP are the oddballs in .45 auto pistols. There are others.
Got lots of .45ACP ammo, cases, projectiles, but no gun.....Yet.

The XD is a cool piece, but way too light for my tastes. I prefer a 'heavier' feel. It helps make up for my tendency to pull up and left.

hey hog. what are you wanting the weapon for? will it be for plinking or for defense? most of the new polymer pistols have ambidextrous controls. if you have a local gun-shop with range most of them have rental weapons. this way you could actually fire and get a feel for the different makes and models. ounce you find a style of weapon you like then you can narrow it down further according to use, reliability and price. hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions or you can send me a pm. best jim

Mainly for defense and plinking occasionally I have serveral different types of pistols. I do like the polymers like the glock, XD, etc.. My next purchase I'm thinking of going with the 1911 sytle in .45. I like the Kimbers & Wilson guns, but they are S P E N D Y !!! A few of the 1911's I've seen have ambidextrious controls. I shoot alright righthanded, but mainly shoot lefty.
So, We'll see.

No rides here I would never do that. And If I was, it would be blatently apparent. I was just confused at the .45 & 45 auto deal. I assumed them to be the same, but was looking for some clarification by others in the know. I didn't want to buy a gun only to find out I should have bought something different. There are soooooooo many different calibers out there. I really get confused when it comes to rifle calibers. Not the standard .308, 30.06, .223, 7mm stuff. It's the 5.56mm, 7.62, nato stuff is where I get left in the dust. Been looking at AR15 styles for protection against squirrels & such Man, there are a lot of different manufacturers out there. I know just enough to be dangerous...... to myself.

Picked me up a Springfield XD .45 compact model. I really liked it and felt pretty good in my hand. At some point, I'm going to "Invest" in a Kimber model blah blah blah. Jim was kind enough to mention a sweet compact model, but my "short timers syndrome" has kicked in. I went to Kimber's site. Man they make a lot of different models. Jim---- What model was it you mentioned ?

I have the Kimber Custom CDPII and it is a sweet shooting gun. Sold a Glock .45 and this Kimber makes the glock feel like a complete POS. I thought it would have a nastykick to it since it is so light but it doesn't and is a tack driver. On top of that it looks good. http://www.kimberamerica.com/pistols/cdp/customcdp.php

AAAaaah, Hell! I'd be happy with just a plain old, used M1911A from WWII. Maybe just with a new barrel, and the slide tightened (in a vise), and maybe a well fitted link and bushing.
Same way we did it in the Marines.

Paying taxes is the unfortunate byproduct of making dough.
I need more writeoffs.
