My HS art teacher (Just passed away recently) offered rod building. I made a pack flyrod out of a fenwick blank.
She wasn't too pretty but I got a "B" for my efforts.
It's an excellent way to get kid interested in the sport.

Good job whoever got this program started

You know the funny thing is that we have around 35 schools that have it as a part of there elective and none in Sequim. Thats pretty sad I think. Fear not in June we will have the Entire Washington state Aggiculture School representives here in PortAngles, around 250 of them. We will be holding classes for them to sit in and learn how to build there first rod. The last few years it has been in Wynachee and other places but they thought it would be a good idea to bring it here so thats cool. Bill and I have tought around 75 School teachers in the last few years so hopfully we will be able to double that because its in our back Yard. This programe is only for Schools so its not open to the public. Its really exciting to be apart of something so big and the long term goal is to make it an elective for every school we can in the US. How is that for bringing new fisherman to the art of rod building!

Karry,
Getting kids started early seems like a great idea. Are there any plans to maybe do something similar down here?

Island City Oregon Union Baker High School has one. We are going to go slow with this programe so we can make sure that everything runs good. So fare the program has progressed very smoothly and we have been working hard every day to make it better. This could be the biggest thing that has ever happened to rod building so we want to make sure its perfect. I have seen other componies try and they just mess is up so we have around a dozen folks helping us as too the right direction with this so we can go Nation wide. You would not believe the positive feed back we have been getting from the teachers,Students and in turn Parents,Uncles,Aunts, Grandpas ETC its awsome.

I actually taught a professor from Washington State cougars a few years back and he gave me a can of Cougar Gold Cheese for a gift and it was awesome. I think the problem was finding an instructer that could draw in the cash to make it happen. High Schools are a bit diffrent in that its not a money maker its much bigger than that if you know what I mean. I know Fishermans Outlet here in Sequim has a class once a month if anyone is interested, let me know. There is a shop in Monroe called All About The Fly that holds rod building classes as well. Also we have the rod building show at the Lamiglass plant in April as well. If you have never been to this you should go its a big eye opener on how a rod is designed and built. The custom part of it may be over the top but we have folks there of all levels of expertise to answer questions.

You could also by the Flex Coat start to finish DVD if your interested in trying your first rod this way you old farts that cant keep up you can hit pause and change your depends LOL.

I offer Batson's program here at Prosser High School. I run the class after school in the winter months and it is a great success. The really cool thing about the program is it gets students into school who are not usually connected with other school activities. Once we are done with the rods we still meet as a group and dive into other topics that interest the particular group. We have done other things like fly tying, salmon and steelhead techniques and setups. Things that most of us taught ourselves or learned from parents like tying egg loops and covering fishing regulations. I figure that at least they have heard the right thing to do from one source so that they have the chance to be a productive law following fisherman!

Does he have any kids in high school yet? Small towns crack me up. I grew up in Ritzville which is way smaller than here and it still seems that I run into people who know someone from there when growing up I thought it was the end of the earth.
