Lake Washington Trout Fishing - Smelt subsitute? new
      #318192 - 01/22/08 09:32 PM

I'll be cruising around Mercer Island testing out a buddies new boat, and looking for a date with Mr. Cutthroat. I've heard that there are lots of longfin smelt coming into the lake this time of year and the cutts gooble them up. So...any ideas on how to mimic smelt on a trolling rig? Can't make it down to the Cow to get the real stuff.

Rapala in the apropriate size and color should do the trick.

Use a long minnow type bait like a Rapala. Troll the #9 broken back perch color with a 2 oz. ball weight. Don't be surprised to catch Mr. Smallmouth, Mr. Jumbo Perch and Mr. Monster Rainbow while trolling for Mr. Cutthroat.

Time to get to Outdoor Emporium tonight and see what they have in the Rapala depart. My needlefish collection will probably be reviewed as well.

Someone took a 14.9 pound Cutt out of LW a couple of years back. Who knew? My buddy caught Mr. giant rainbow while we trolled for sockeye, so maybe we'll run into him.

My best Rainbow in Lk. Wash. was just over 7.5 lbs. Caught on the Perch Rapala rig listed above. I was casting the setup instead of trolling as I was in a Bass tournament. Due to the tournament, this fish was not allowed in the boat. The most perfect colored Rainbow I've ever seen and didn't even get a picture. Actually I was pissed, big time. I thought I had a nice Smallie at first which would have been money in my pocket.

7.5 lbs. ain't too shabby, and that must've been a heck of a surprise. Found a #3 rapala in perch in the collection, but the #9 was out at OE. I've heard that trolling with a 6 oz ball weight and mooching rig with orange dot herring is super productive so I picked that up. Also some of the UV pro-cure gel in shrimp/krill. Can't hurt anyway, but I've no idea if the UV stuff is effective.

When I fished Lake WA a lot during spring breaks (March-April) from school, I caught some nice cutties from shore. Biggest ones were about 21 inches and lots between 15 and 20 inches. I mostly used bait (worms/nightcrawlers hopped slowly along the bottom) from docks. But kastmasters (blue and chrome finish) worked well when there were lots of smolts in the water.

My biggest rainbow was also about 21 inches and weighed around 3+ lbs, also caught from shore on worms.

I never reported, sorry about that. We went last Sat morning, and it was pretty chilly. Water temp was sitting at 42 degrees, and not a bite. Fishing off the east side of mercer island in 25-60ft of water (windy!). I was using cowbell and red wedding ring with brass blade tipped with Gulp nightcrawler. Also used cut plug herring on a #2 gami steelheader rig with a 4 oz weight.
