Just the opposite. As long as it is your checked bags (that go in the belly of the plane) your ok. Can not be in a carry on. LIL

According to the TSA, carrying on hooks is fine. I carried 2 boxes of flies on in my backpack when I went to Mexico, and when I returned. Also make sure not to check your rods and reels. Carry them so you can be sure they arrive with you.

"Tackle Equipment - Fishing equipment should be placed in your checked baggage. Some tackle equipment can be considered sharp and dangerous. Expensive reels or fragile tackle such as fly's should be packed in your carry-on baggage ."

I don't know where you are going, but from Anchorage to about anyplace (like Kenai or King Salmon) you may be in a Cessna Caravan, or a 4 seat Piper. You never know what you are going to end up in when you take the last leg. Some of those palnes have no overhead. I'd ask the carrier before you book your flight.

If I were you I wouldn't attempt carry anything that smears, pours, blows up or stabs on board. If you absolutely have to call TSA in advance and get a verbal that it's alright, then show up at least 2 hours EARLIER than you would have. I do not care what the TSA Reg says because apparently none of the employees have read the same version. You may walk right through and you may be hung up for a couple hours. I have been late for a plane way more than once because of this type of an issue.

I agree with Cluck. Whenever I'm flying with anything that may cause a problem with TSA, I go to their website before hand and print out the regs, with the header attached. I've found that if I can show the bumbass at the counter/gate/security checkpoint what the rules state, not what they think they say, I am able to get thru.
BTw when flying in Ak, you'd be surprised with what you can carry on the plane. I've walked on with my fillet knife, fishing rod and never even looked at funny.

I carry on all my reel and open the bag flat so they don't dump
it out on the stainless table. I had a bail broken in Chicago
on one of my Cardinal 4's and my back pack wes poured out on the table. I almost ended up in shiny braclets. I do check my rods and the tubes needs to be less than 72" and 3" pipe.

One of my buddies had his rods stolen when he checked them. I have read about reels and boxes of flies stolen as well, when checked. Too easy to pocket those items, as they are small. Better safe than sorry. I carry on the important stuff, and check my clothes.

I've been using a nifty rod carrier that I purchased from Cabelas a couple years ago. It's a sturdy black plastic carrier made by Flambeau, their "Bazuka Pro" model with minimum dimensions of 8" x 72" and it can be extended in length by at least 24". This carrier has made two trips to the Grizz Den in Ketchikan thus far and I really like it cause it has a large enough capacity that it'll handle a rod inventory suitable for the needs of my son and I for week long trips of varied fishing tactics. This carrier is acceptable by Alaska Airlines standards and for the doubters, I have never been charged a penalty fee for excess size or weight.
Besides those trips I have made several more to other locations traveling alone with less gear and used smaller tubes I made with PVC pipe. I always check my rod carriers in with my other check in luggage, and will continue to do so.
Tackle also goes into the check in luggage, but the reels generally go into my/our carry on bags.

My rod tube is a lamiglas one and is probably bout 4 1/2 feet long i think.
Never thought bout carrying the reels in carry on.. Hmm intresting... I know I will put my hooks and all my stuff on check in and in a big box.
But ya I was just curious cause i guess my graduation present is a trip to alaska!

I built a submarine comemorative rod for an old shipmate of mine and he brought it up for a fishin' trip on Express Air. It was in a rod sock and a PVC "rod case" and checked in. It made it to Boise just fine but when got home he noticed that the cap had been removed from the case and was now loose. He didn't think much of it until 3 months later when he took the rod out and found both sections broken. The rod had to have been broken when it was out of case.

When I went to Alaska two summers ago I bought two wheeled coolers. On the way down I packed my tackle, reels, waders and etc in the coolers along with large duffel bags for the return trip. I had my fish vac packed & frozen. Then I used the processors scale to load each to the 50lb limit. Packed my fishing stuff in the duffel bags & paid the extra $50 bucks for each "extra" bag. $1/lb is cheaper than any shipping rate I have found. Plus your catch theoretically arrives @ home the same time you do. Had to ask around to use freezers for the packaged & frozen stuff I had caught earlier in the week but it worked out great for me!

If you are flying Alaska Airlines you can check a tackle box as a free 3rd piece of luggage. And it seems the term "tackle box" can be interpreted very loosely judging by the size/weight of what we took along this summer.
From the Alaska site:
"The following items may be checked free as a third bag: Two rods, two reels, and one tackle box encased in a proper hard case or Alaska Airlines box. Fishing equipment is authorized to exceed 62 inches. However, if the item is excess or overweight it is subject to applicable fee."
We always take a printed copy of the rule because most of the time they will try to charge you for the 3rd piece of luggage. We just used a plastic storage bin with a hinged lid(pronounced tackle box) and taped it up in an Alaska Airlines box. Worked like a charm.
