Finally finished my .458 SOCOM.
I originally got the upper from Marty at Teppo Jutsu with a Vortex flash hider. I got the walnut forearm from Chris at Wild Cherry Woodworks, and that is where I was for a while.
Marty turned the aft end down on a Shrewd muzzle brake to match the barrel, and it looked fine, but I wanted the stock to match the forearm, so I got in touch with Chris at Wild Cherry again and we figured out a plan to match the Ace stock to the forearm. I fashioned a fiberglass buffer tube cover and Chris laminated it with walnut. After a bit of fitting today, I got it all put together.
Fun project.

Shot about 100 rounds through it so far. Kicks like a 12 gauge slug gun, but semi-automatic, so it is managable. The optic on it has no magnification, but even so, I can print cloverleaf patterns with it at 50 yards
Power level is similar to a .45-70.
5.56x45 (.223) and .458 Socom.
.45-70, .458 Socom, .223, .44 Rem Mag.

I have slugs from 250 to 500 grains that I can reload. My favorite is a 348 grain custom brass bullet, turned on a lathe by Barnes. I only have 100 of them ($1 a pop), but they'll punch through any animal on this continent from one end to the other. Penetration on that monolith is measured in feet, not inches.
Gotta develop a load for them for my upcoming bear hunt.
One projectile currently under development by Lehigh bullets, a custom bullet mfg, is an 86 grain aluminum hollowpoint. These exit at about 3,100 fps for 1,800 foot pounds of energy, but with the right powder you could push that upwards of 3,500 fps. The upside to this bullet is that it dumps its energy with 6 inches or less. CQB anyone? Foot pounds energy (fpe) on these rounds are between 1,800-2,400. The standard 5.56x45 SS109 62 grain load develops just 1,200 fpe.
The 250 and 350 grain lead and copper bullets leave the muzzle at about 2,300 and 2000 fps respectively for right around 3,100 foot pounds of energy. This is compared to a .308 or .30-06 shooting a 150 grain projectile at 2800 fps for 2,600 fpe.
I'd hate to see the business end go "flash".
It uses standard AR15/M16 mags. As long as I own it, I can honestly say I'm buying a 10 round mag for my .458 Socom (30 round AR mag).

Sub minute groups if you have magnification, but I'm using it specifically for 100 yards and under and have a red-dot sight on it. Trajectory like a rainbow, same as a .45-70.
I can shoot cloverleaf patterns at 50 yards with iron sights or the dot. One hole groups would be possible if I put a 3-9x40mm scope on it.
