Chalk one up!!!
      #321845 - 02/20/08 06:24 AM

Went down to Nor Cal this last weekend to see my brother. We fished Redwood Creek near Orick where I released this bright native hen. Been a while since I've seen steel so thought I'd post it. Also fished the Mad river a bit. Not a lot of visibility but folks (not us) were catching fish. Thinking about heading back down south in 3 or 4 weeks to hit up the Rogue for my 2cnd, 3rd, 4th, etc steelies of 08.

3rd, 4th, etc., Now you know why I spent 2 months (Dec/Jan) on the Chetco; and as of today I/motor home are 'escounced' on the middle Rogue a few feet above/across from Evans Creek (no, not named after me) just below/across from the town of Rogue River.

Looked at my gas bills over the past 6-8 months and found that I was spending $60-70/mth (average) driving my car up/down/everywhere chasing (that's) MR. Steelhead to you. Given I can set myself up (it's like driving around a one bedroom condo) for $350/mth plus elec., 2/3'rds of the cost is covered and I've got miles of river within 15 minutes of 'the front door.'

A good thing!!

Let us know how you do on the Rogue Fred. the forecast looks like we might get enough water to get these coastal rivers going again.

Yes, keep us in the loop. I want my first Rogue experience to match what I have heard about the fish in that system.

I guess all the fish on Redwood Creek are native, and those Californians are sure protective of their fish. Regs are tight down there.

Bulk of the winter's have already passed through the lower section of the Rogue (Gold Beach) from what I'm given to understand. Only 'iffy' info on what's going on around Agness.

That said, the majority of the winter fish are still hanging (well) below Grants Pass. (Water flow at Grants Pass: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=14361500)

Per the 'fish count' hot line 504 'winter steelead' (aka any fish through the counter after Jan 1)have passed over Gold Rae dam. Not a bad number, but it takes a couple of thousand to really get the upper 30 miles of the Rogue going.

That said, the best bet (imho) at this time is below Merlin. LOTS of 'public access' as well as several boat ramps along the river. My bet, for tomorrow, would be the Ennis Riffle to Rand (may start as low as 'Argo' and work up-stream?) as to where to find MR. Winter Run.

Vis a vis fishing the Rogue, do get the Amatto (sp?) river map ... years old it may be, but it's still 'dead on.'

Good info on the Rogue Fred. I have heard from a few friends that they are catching them in pretty good numbers below the mouth of the applegate. I will be doing a drift down the middle rogue in two weeks so I hope the fish are in good by then. Also the applegate should start picking up. I fished up above williams on Monday and had one take down but it was slow, we need some rain to get the fish up into the applegate in good numbers.

Have my 38' motor home 'ensconced' across the river from the town of Rogue River. You see these gas prices!!!!???? Need a 'home away from home? Call me 541 944 0404; be here until early March.

A month, after 2 months on the Chetco may sound like a bit of 'over-kill,' but I looked at what I was spending on gas for the Jeep. Cutting my 'commuting time' by 3/4 (cost of gas) is damned near paying for a months rent in an excellent RV park.

Fred

Edit: just posted what rock to stand on for Matson Bar/Finley Bend below Grants Pass on another Oregon thread.
