Floated Lathrup to Robertson with Guide Jon Geyer on Wednesday! We went 1 for 3 with a few other good bites that I could swing on fast enough! For the middle of the week we saw more folks that we expected...about 10 other boats. The fish are out there just spread out & not very active!

Nice fish, I hope they start showing up in good numbers soon. I have three or four trips planned for the middle rogue and applegate in March. Good job on the fish!

Hell, you floated right by me and didn't off me a lift???????
All kidding aside, this section of the river is up to its 'eye-balls' in winter runs. Same day I hooked two at Matson Bar (aka Finley bend). Started with 'pluck, pluck and more plucks' on my fly ... zip. Trout? Naaa, didn't think so.
Dropped leader from 10# to 8, then to 6, finally 4# maxima and a size 10 fly. Correction there: #8 bead head prince nymph altered with a couple of short black rubber legs right behind the bead.
No plucks anymore, two solid hook ups ..... and with 4# leader ..... looooong range (or should that be rage) release?
The turn off to Matson is about a mile down road from Whitehorse Park, turn left and down the road about 2 miles to the beach. When you come off the end of the road onto the bar drive straight ahead and park. Just about dead center in the river (rather wide at this point) are a large elongted pile of rocks on what otherwise is a long section of smooth river bottom.
Given what you've got out there, where the fish will hold, move through, etc., is a 'no brainer. Long cast, one of the few places where a 100 foot spey cast is really needed, here on the Rogue.
Yes, I have NO problem telling folks what rock to stand on. 'by the by, he's right about the number of boats, even I was surprised. Bank fishermen ..... almost nada over 20'ish miles of river.

Fred we too had lots of soft biters...acting like trout!!! The one fish we hooked and lost came straight to the boat playing the steelhead game of I am not hooked yet & then took off like a bat outta hell when he saw the boat & spit my yarnie back at me all at the same time...

Went 4 for 4 yesterday, same drift Lathrop to Robertson. Same story too, lots of boats.
Fred, was that you on the 2-handed long sword?
Proud member of the CCA as of this afternoon, looking forward to helping out Nathan.

This is good to hear guys! I will be getting my grandpa out to do a drift on the middle rogue in two weeks. We will probably hit my friends property on the applegate as well. This little bit of rain in the forcast should get some more fish into the middle river and applegate.

DJ, willing to make a money bet on it.
Number of boats on the river waaaay down from the past two afternoon. Could just be the day of the week, but almost no pressure in the Whitehorse - Matson run. No joy for several hours of casting.
That said, between Wednesday/Thursday did get a heck of a sun burn.

Hollywood, I'd recommend a drift that takes you by the 'All Sports park if you're going out this weekend.

Good thanks for the info Fred. My uncle landed one nice steelhead on the applegate yesturday so we will fish it and maybe do a drift on the rogue. So do you think from baker park to below whitehorse would be a good drift Fred? Thanks

Just got a reliable report. Another large group of fish was moving by/through the Rand area on Wednesday. Fellows were using 'side-planers' and silver/red flat fish behind.

Welcome to Southern Oregon Jake. We tell folks what's going on ,,,, and where.
The first block of fish I was working over are now over Savage Rapids dam and have moved up/through town of Rogue River (where I'm at in the MH). Second 'block' of fish that I know of are now in the immediate Grants Pass.
No 'new news' about what's moving below that at the moment. Vis a vis fish in the upper river check the fish count at 800 472 2434. Not much as of a couple of days ago (600 some as of Jan 1). Can't tell you what 'rock' to stand on, but we in Southern Oregon do share 'real info.'
