I've been fishing for trout using powerbait in the last few days. I was getting a bite here and there along with everyone else. Some other people showed up and between the 2 of them they pulled out 10 trout in less than an hour. I'd been fishing there all morning and had 2 or 3 trout. Today they came and once again they slaughtered the trout. I had to ask them what they were using. They were using salmon egg flavor powerbait, but they said they kept moving it along the bottom. His rule was go one full turn on his reel and then let it sit for about 10 seconds and repeat if he didn't hook anything. I tried this using the normal type of powerbait I was using all morning and I got bites like crazy. My only trouble was hooking fish. I tried setting the hook immediately after feeling the bite, but hooked very little percentage of them. My best approach was to let them chew on it for a long time and give them slack if they needed it. Then I'd set the hook and usually get them. This is not a good technique for catch and release, but it works great. Have you guys tried this technique of moving the powerbait along the bottom? Any variations to presenting powerbait?

I will show up to a dock and do the same thing to ya You would be suprized how many people don't pick up on the only difference from what I'm doing and what there doing. They don't notice my bait sitting on the ground behind me while I'm going for the cast? Using a longer leader (depending on depth ect.) will get your bait out of the milfoil which is 4,5,6 ft plus. I start off w/ 6ft and adjust from there. My .02

DR P - I fished the 3/1 opener on Upper Caliche lake, me and my buddy were fishing from shore using marshmallow/crawler combo, 4 guys beside us were fishing power bait and slowly reeling as you described, they were catching fish after fish and we only had a couple, we switched to a red power bait nugget with half a crawler and the trout were all over it,(we were just letting it sit) we ended up limiting before the guys who were slowly reeling the pbait. By the way WDFW did a great job of stocking Caliche with 13-14" trout and we caught a couple of 18" holdovers, I'll be back next March!

I'm catching them at Lake Leland in Quilcene. I've used sherbert (pink/orange mixed) and Rainbow (green, yellow, and orange mixed) with success. I couldn't really tell any difference between the two colors, but there was a big difference when I started reeling in slowly. How do you guys hook the fish after you get a bite? I just gave them slack, but held just enough to feel if they were still biting. I'd let them chew on it for quite a while before setting the hook. Another thing I thought about was if you set the hook moving the rod straight up or off to the side. I'd always set the hook with the rod going straight up, but on the last fish of the day I swung the rod sideways and it hooked them good. Maybe I'm thinking trout fishing too much. I just want to be one of the guys that slays the trout when no one else is catching any.

First off make sure your hooks are sharp just like any other kind of fishing. We don't set its just a slow pull and start reeling. But then again we catch them two at a time

Dr P, sounds like you use the same hook-setting technique I do when I'm in the catch and keep mode, give em some slack, let em take the bait for a few seconds and give em the old overhand hook set, seems if they're on the bite the bait is usually swallowed by then, Marty has a great point too, keep those hooks sharp!

Last year 4 me the powerbait really worked, never had used it, but the chartruese with the glitter was really outfishing everything else, the rainbow(sherbert) worked good too, then the green, in that order.Equally as good though was a red corky and a worm.I use #8 hooks, they are not sticky sharp, just straight out of the package.I like to keep it basic for trout, it is more of a relax thing 4 me, is about the only time i use my clip on bell. It alerts me that a fish has hit and wakes me up from siestas.(oh my technique for powerbait is a bobber and 8- 10 ft under it) Happy troutin' Woodsy Wayne [ 03-30-2002, 11:51 AM: Message edited by: wayne ]

If your letting them swallow the bait...circle hooks will get the hook up to the mouth. No setting the hook...just start reeling.

always singles for trout, i dont use trebles for anything, unless you like snags or really beat up fish too bloody to release, stick with a single hook always imo.
Preferably barbless, they work better anyway, from my experience.
Live And Learn.( I always take trebles off lures) They are cheap hooks for one!! hope that helps Woodsy Wayne [ 04-01-2002, 03:16 PM: Message edited by: wayne ]

Wayne I was in catch and kill mode and I was using some little trebles. It was about a #14 treble and I was surprised that it wasn't messing the fish up too bad. These are small fish about 8-9" so they aren't swallowing the hook very far. In fact the single hooks seemed like they would go back deeper than the treble would. Today I went there and tried a little silver Bud's spinner and caught about 8 trout. I've got 8 in the refrigerator from yesterday so I released all the fish today. I didn't have any that were hooked bad with the spinner. One got hooked in the eye, but other than that it was ok. My younger bro has been having fun with trout fishing. Now he is begging me to take him fishing . I've got a fishing partner now.

Wayne on bigger trout I'm sure it would make a difference because they can swallow a little ball of powerbait really deep. These little ones I think a treble is better.
Trout fishing sure is relaxing. I like steelheading better, but a good day of trout fishing sure is nice. I've been going every morning for the past 5 days or so. Now I've gotta work so I can't go every morning .
