Hunter's Education
      #324847 - 03/13/08 10:15 PM

I signed both my 11 year old daughter and my 8 year old son up for Hunters Ed. Class. When I did this the guy signing people up tried to tell me that the boy was "too young" to understand ethics and that most instructors would soon be recomending for the class to be for 10 years and up. I argued enough for him to let my son sign up and told him the boy understands more ethics than a lot of adults that hunt.

Well the final written test was tonight and they both past with flying colors!!! It was not the ethics that got my son, he missed the easy stuff like which caliber is larger etc... He knows now Now onto the field test on Saturday Morning. From what I hear it is not to hard, just remembering safe handling. After he spent a couple days with no BB gun for pointing it at the house, he knows safe handling! I am very proud of both my kids and they are sure to be excellent hunters!

Very cool. I'm sure your a proud poppa.

My son, now 11 passed his two years ago. Still waiting to get him his first deer.
What surprised me was that my daughter has been pestering me to get her hunter ed card.
To my way of thinking, every kid should take the course. teach them about caring for the environment, ethics and above all, gun safety. Probly be a lot less accidents that way.

I would like to see all kids taught this at school and at home, but I know it won't happen. Yet simultaneously, they are taught to play video games where violence reigns in suburbia.

Not saying I would want ot live there. It definetly on my list of must visits though. I love where I live. Good schools, good weather, good job, great family, decent hunting & fishing, good people that I have known all my life here.

I have already told them that it will be one at a time (child that is). Looks like I will have to try to make more time for hunting this year, boy that sure is to bad. Hehehehe.

You are on the right path. It is a lot of fun.

We limited it to one firearm between the boys on any deer hunt. I was done early, so I carried a shotgun for birds. For grouse hunts Ryan carried the Chipmunk .22 unloaded but he had a few Barney Fife rounds in his pocket. Hunter got a loaded .410 or 20g, and I batted cleanup with the 12g.

Take lots of pictures.

Safety and restraint is why. That strategy let me focus on one kid at a time. Oldest child got first shot because of seniority. It also made each kill special, as it was their shot to make or blow alone. There was also no arguing over who had shot priority, etc.

Both boys were with me when I got my elk in 2007. I brought the oldest boy to within 10 yards of 20 elk during the late season, but no bulls were in that group. Both boys got their first kills, grouse, by themselves, and the youngest got to learn that you don't always get a shot.

Safety is job number one above all, as I am their guide, and it is my responsibility to keep them safe. Bill has the same ethics and standards as I. Nothing wrong with showing restraint.

I only wish we had the deer population and densities that you guys in Alaska have. Unfortunately we have a higher population of window lickers down here who don't know how to hunt. You and Stick are lucky guys, with all the game you have.

Some pics from this last year.

Dog sized damage elk.

Hunter's first grouse.

Ryan's first grouse.

Hunter's first deer.

Hunter's first bunny. (just in time for Easter)

Notice the head shot with the ML. 20 yards.

As citified as we are down here, there are still some serious hicks down in the lower 48. Some of us are even white collar bankers who try to pass this on to our kids. To each their own on the method taught. Hopefully you understand my method now. You don't have to agee with it.

For a city guy and his boys who live in a state with limited hunting opportunities, we do pretty well.

No luck here. 15 deer in 15 years is a pretty good record in a state where your are allowed one deer per year. 7 elk in 10 years of chasing them, so my success is above average. We live in a small town of 1,600 and our new home will border the city limits, so that all the boys will have to do is step across the property line and start hunting.

Yup, nice to have a target rich environment in which to practice. For year round practice we'll head to the dairy farm to beat up on the barn pigeons. It gets to the point that they recognize the truck and fly off.
