Elk/Cougar encounter new
      #323245 - 03/01/08 06:18 PM

Recieved this from a friend mo mine from Utah...pretty cool!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
> Subject: elk, cougar encounter final
>

> I took these photos on Monday the 18th of Feb. at 12:30 PM at mm 34.5 on
> Hiway 191 just north of the Covered Wagon Ranch. The six point bull elk
was
> belly deep in snow and struggling. I stopped to observe, and when the elk
> stood up, I noticed something hanging from his neck. A cougar was
attempting
> a choke hold to suffocate the elk by collapsing his trachea. These photos
> are just a few of the pictures I took during this five minute struggle.
> Finally the cat gave up on his choke hold and decided to take a look at
me.
> He took a couple steps toward me, and I put my hands into the air and
yelled
> loudly. He hesitated, looked back at the elk that was now meandering south
> along the hiway, and then looked back towards me. I raised my hands and
> yelled again, he finally retreated up the hill, and the encounter was
over.
>
> The bull headed south apparently uninjured and feeling very lucky.

He could probably sell that photo, what a shot. Looks like the elk came close to losing an eye, if he didn't. Bill

What an encounter! Few people will ever see a couger, let alone see one attacking a bull. Now, where are the pics of the dead lion?

Once in a lifetime occurrence for certain, and I bet the camera man is ok with that.

Notice in the second pic how that bull is applying a hoof to the ribs? I bet there was more than one of those kicks that resulted in the escape.

I would have liked to see a picture of a dead cat as well.

That cat must have been pretty damn hungry to resort to drastic measures like taking on a fully mature bull elk.

those are awesome pics. the kind of thing that one is lucky to see in a lifetime. and something you can't stage for a "nature show" on PBS.
