Okay guys enough of the BS.

As per your question about barrel length...

I don't believe long distance shooting is all about the barrel. You need a combintation of things, above average optics, good scope, bullet built for distance and knock down power for what you are shooting, good rest, experienced shooter, and of course a barrel. I would not use a barrel any longer than 26 inches and think a 24 should be fine. You must remember when choosing what bullet to use, that it should be dead on accurate from a COLD barrel. I see to many people taking their gun to the range and firing 2-3 boxes of shells before getting the gun "dialed in". Then they take it hunting and shoot at a critter and miss the vitals. Why? Because a cold barrel performs different than a hot one. I am not sure exactly what it is but I know heat allows metal to move easier thus creating an unstable shot.

I think it is a package deal. You need all the above mentioned items. And most firearms experts will tell you to practice with a cool barrel.

I just know what I read. Definetly no expert. Thanks for the tips. I do not consider myself a long range shooter. Not too many chances at getting more than a 500 yrd shot around here. I prefer to sneak in and get a short shot at em.

Submission you've biten off more than you can chew. I'd drop it if I were you, unless you have been on here constantly and viewed the deleted and edited posted before they were so. A little odd that you registered today and voiced such an opinion today. Just a little FRIENDLY advice. I would say welcome to the board but you have already welcomed yourself.

I have two rifles with 16" barrels that will print groups under an inch at 100 yards.

The Oly Arms .223 bull barrel shoots less than a half inch at 100 using Black Hills red box 55 grain fmj. No special ammo needed. The barrel was cryo stress relieved and while heavy and flashy (no flash hider), it shoots very well for an AR15 with a stock trigger. I've only played with this out to 350 yards, but the accuracy held the same sub minute grouping.

My Pac-Nor 16" barrel on an AR15 upper in .458 Socom (wildcat round) shot well at 100 yards with a 5 round cloverleaf with my Leupold vari-x 3 3.5-10, at .75" CTC. This is a custom rifle with a 2 lb Jard trigger. These were handloads.

I also have a .17 HMR, a 22" barrel, that printed a 5 shot group .446 at 100 yards. This was using a 4-12 BSA Sweet 17 scope. This is a stock Marlin with a Rifle Basix trigger group. Awesome for a rimfire.

The one constant of all three is that they are all "heavy barrel" contours in stainless steel.

My one skinny barrel that shoots really well is a Ruger M77RS in .300 Win Mag. Shooting PMC Eldorado ammunition loaded with 150g Barnes X bullets it shoots under and inch at 100. I have a great load with 200g Matchkings, but they aren't a good hunting bullet. Longest shot made was a bear at 346 yards using the PMC/Barnes rounds.

Break it in, keep it reasonably clean, and use the right ammo. I don't scrub the bore every session, just clean the actions and run a patch. Every thousand rounds I clear out the copper. (More barrels have been ruined by constant cleaning than you would think.) Of these rifles only one requires handloads, but it took a bit of work to find the right factory loads.
