Rainshadow XST 1084 Vs Sage 290F new
      #323979 - 03/09/08 06:16 PM

All this "rod talk" got me to thinking again....I'm mulling having an XST 1084 or perhaps even a 1143 made to replace an older IMX 1025c in my arsenal of rods. I just seem to enjoy drift fishing the 9' to 9' 6" rods way more than the shorter ones anymore. I'll grab my lami X96 JC or the Sage 290 over that sweet little IMX....

But as I have a 9' Sage 290 already, what differences are there between the 2 rods in question (Sage & XST 1084)...& is one better than the other in certain applications??

Elkman just built me a new XST 1084. It is sweet. I have no idea what it fishes like though, because the day after I got it, we had a baby. So chances are it won't get out for a while. Love the action though.

Sorry I can't compare to a Sage 290, but I have two XST 1084's, one spinning and one casting. I used the casting rod exclusively, while my son in law used the spinning rod pretty much exclusively this past season on Idaho's Clearwater river. We absolutely loved both rods. They were sensitive, yet had all the power needed to handle the B run fish. I've got some pictures posted of the results and even a couple of the rods in action on the Idaho Reports page. Rainshadow all the way, for me!

The Sage 290 in my opinion is the hands down best drift rod period. That said the XST1084 is also a phenominal blank.

In my opinion, yes, my 290 is the best drift rod I've ever had in my hand. Have fished a few factory versions and they are considerable heavier than mine, but still a nice rod.I haven't tried any of the new Loomis offerings, don't know anything about them, but have tried just a bit of everything I could build or get my hands on since the days of the original IMX and IM700 offerings, made rods out of low to high end fly blanks, and anything else I could think of to make a better rod and the action, sensitivity and power of the Sage just seems to fit me perfectly.

FWIW, there's a guy on another Piscatorial board that has fished the Sage 290 and the XST 1084 and prefers the 1084.
