Not legal right now except for two instances.

Timber companies are allowed to bait bears and remove them as part of a depredation hunt.

The Quinault reservation is open season on bear baiting because of their sovereign nation status. Guided hunts only. Look to spend $1,500 or so for the opportunity. Our hunt is April 18-20. Pictures to follow.

Last year we had 5 bears come in one evening.

They are expanding hound hunting for damaged tree farms as well.

I just wish someone had been smart enough to challenge the initiative right after the vote, as it was unconstitutional. It tackled too many items, bear and cougar hunting with bait and hounds. Initiatives can only tackle a single issue.

Some Olympia guys were acquitted on a bear baiting charge due to the unconstitutionality of the initiative.
