Fly Fishing Books (How To)
      #326762 - 03/27/08 07:02 PM

I am dedicating this year to really learn how to fly fish. What got to have books are out there for the novice. If anyone has any to sell let me know. Otherwise I guess I'll be on Amazon.com

Nothing like hiring a guide/instructor. I have the card from a guy who I'll hire this yr, once my finances are up to it. I had a 5 minute quick lesson from him at the Sportman's Show 2 yrs ago, and it taught me more than most books I've read.

DVD's are 'spensive but worth it for the visual learners like me. Check Ebay

For non-casting topics, I'd recommend 'Fly-fishing for Dummies'. No, really. There's some decent stuff there.

For specificity, find a good local fly shop and ask. Oh, and it helps to listen to the answer. One of these days I'll learn to do that.

I'm with W4F. Go to the local fly shop, and sign up for casting lessons. It isn't really that expensive. Possibly your local community ed offers fly fishing classes too. Get on the water casting lessons. Then find a local pond with bluegills and go fishing. Gills are a great fly fishing tool because in the early summer there is plenty of action, and you learn when to set the hook, plus you get a lot of casting in.

Hands on is the way to go.

I agree with the lessons and I like the idea of joining a fly fishing club. All good suggestions but the question still is what are some good fly fishing books. Besides instructions I would like to do a little reading on the subject.

I'd start with...

"L.L. Bean Fly-Fishing Handbook, Second Edition" (L. L. Bean) by Dave Whitlock,

or...

"Lefty Kreh's Ultimate Guide to Fly Fishing" by Lefty Kreh

or...

"Lefty Kreh's Presenting the Fly: A Practical Guide to the Most Important Element of Fly Fishing" by Lefty Kreh

Then when you become more advanced, I'd make sure to read...

Swisher and Richards' "Fly Fishing Strategies", and "Masters On the Dry Fly" by J. Michael Migel
