A little quality time with my oldest.
      #327947 - 04/07/08 10:02 PM

My oldest boy, Hunter, and I are headed on a spring bear hunt in two weeks. Hunter really wants to be involved in the hunt, so after I told him I didn't have any ammo, as we had shot it all in practice and load testing, he said, "let's make some more".

I had developed a few test loads for the .458 Socom using different powders, bullets, primers, etc. and found an accurate load in the middle of the start/max load powder options, where I usually find them. Funny how that happens so often, regardless of the caliber.

He sized and primed all of the brass, with me right there, then I weighed every charge as he threw the powder. I showed him how to adjust the dies and then he seated every bullet and finally put a nice roll crimp on every round. Two steps, I know, when it could be done in one, but some teaching and learning was taking place.

Once we had loaded 50 rounds, he asked how much they would cost in the store. I said $80. He asked how much these cost us, I told him $52 the first time we load them, then $17 every time after that. I saw a light turn on, I believe.

Then we had to take care of the gun because the barrel is is white stainless steel. It wouldn't be good to have the flashy barrel sticking out of a ground blind, so after a half hour with some bow/gun tape and an exacto knife, we were done.

We are loaded for bear now!

Sounds like a good time with your son.

.458 Socom sounds like quite the sledgehammer. Great quick handling brush gun huh? What is the recoil like?

Hunting on the Quinault reservation with Tater, aka John Bryson. Tags are in my wallet.

16.25" barrel, so it will be a quick brush rifle. Before I put the muzzlebreak on, it was like shooting a 12ga slug gun. Now recoil is a bit milder, but it is also louder.

With 3,000 foot pounds of energy, .308-.30-06 territory, it should do. All we have to do is hit the bear at 30 yards.

Went shooting tonight, Hunter did well. 10 days until we start.

I may need help loading the video onto You-tube.

Don't put it on U Tube - The "antigun", PETA and tree hugging nuts will find SOME way to use it for their purposes! They will probably edit it, and use it with some anti-hound flicks, or anti-"baiting", or "Chinese Gall Bladders" incident!!

Just go, have fun, and take a few "hero" pics for us!

Looks like hunting got moved up, as one of the bears is ripping bait barrels off the trees. Hunter gets his first shot this Staurday.

...and screw those PETA fawkers. I won't change what I do to appease them. If I do, they have won.

Loaded for bear now. Got both guns sighted in and test fired just to make sure, DVD camera charged, half mile rope spool and snatch blocks in the bed, water jug filled, knives good to go, zip ties ready, and tags in the wallet.

We saw two flickers, some crows, a few blue jays, a toad, some bats, and Boo-boo's little brother hightailing it down the road as we drove out. No big-uns today, but we saw eveidence of them. We'll be back at 'em tomorrow.

Last night we had a big bear, 350# plus, at about 35 yards but it didn't present a clear target. There was a 4" tree in the way. That tree is coming down tomorrow, along with the bear.

Trail cam is set, so we should have some good pictures. Father-in-law filmed the bear, but for some reason I can't get the images off of the DVD. I felt so bad for Hunter, and I'll be second guessing myself on that go-no go shot for a while. I could have made a neck shot on the thing, but it was his shot.

Naaah, no clear shot = no shot. Tomorrow will provide a clear shot and a clean kill which is what really matters.
"Bear Porn" coming.

I totally agree. Better to take a good shot than a marginal one. Especially if your sone is the one doing the shooting.
Don't want a wounded animal running around, ESPECIALLY one with big teeth & claws!!!!
