Halibut!!
      #330581 - 04/26/08 07:43 PM

Big Thanks to Navigator from me and the crew for a great time today. Hitched a ride with this morning and scored a 40# piece of fish and chips.

Trip was very hard on the fishing supplies.. Lost a Brand new rod /reel when the Fishon Rod holder sheared off... Not good. Went through every spreader bar he had on the boat ... blech. Coffee can full of sinkers (have you priced sinkers lately!!!) Overall we came out on the positive side when the brown and white got the spear.

Looking forward to seeing the pics on from Nav's camera.

A guide in BC gave me a tip on Fish On rodholders and I did what he suggested with mine. Put a stainless steel bolt of the appropriate size and length with nut through the shaft of the Fish On. This guide said they will sheer off at the shaft.

I'll be over there Wednesday, moor at Boathaven, stay at KOA, fish until Sunday or until me and my bud have four Butts. If you see a 19 North River Seahawk with Blue Trim, that be me.

Marty, SurferGirl, Anglin'Andrew, and I had a great time Sat, even though we sacrificed much to the Halibut Gods!!
Marty used his best Hawg Quest techniques, and managed to land this great 40# (With expert 'poonin techniques by the skipper on a lightly hooked fish, which threw the hook as soon as the 'poon went in!! )

Andrew had one on for a while, but the barbless hooks won.
Like Marty said, on the down side, was a lot of lost gear.
First thing right off, a rod holder broke, and his brand new rod & reel, new line/gourmet spreader bar/light/hooks/weight, and the rest of my rod holder all took the big dive.
All that was left was this

I've heard about the SS bolt, but that wouldn't have helped here . First time I have seen a failure like this . I'm desiging lanyards for safety in the future.
Also gonna check everyone's drag to see if they will slip in case of a hang-up.
As far as the rest of the gear loss, today I used 40# droppers on the weights, and only lost 1 spreader.
Chris and Leanne went with me today, fished the same area as yesterday, but no luck for us today.
Next Sunday, ling Cod and rock fish will be open, so I will be fishing a bit different area.

trouthead??? fish4steel??? Marty???
I'm waiting to hear from you guys!!!

Sounds like the drag on that rod might have been a little tight for that rod holder! Congrats on the fish.

Jim it was to tight ... on the bright side least it wasn't a custom rainshadow and electric reel.

Nav's B&B is a 5 star establishment for sure. Mitch and Sandy are excellent hosts.
We couldn't find any butts for our boat but we saw others who did. Good weather, great company and ElwoodP even got a hawg Copper Rock Fish.
Thanks Mitch, see you in September.

'an Steve caught an 8 footer, which Chris hand lined to the surface. Had to let it go though, the 7"dia waterlogged piling was foul hooked right in the dorsal!

That was one of the biggest coppers I have ever seen, even in my "Goldfish Bowl" at WF.
We had a great time, even cooked up some toast, bacon, and eggs!! (Them shrimpers got nothin' on us!!)
Thanks for the reel Steve, I can't wait to put it to use.
Looking forward to the next trip with you guys!!

As always, it was great hangin at Mitch & Sandy's, and a treat fishing on Bleu Belle. Too bad the halibut weren't as hospitable. I enjoyed meeting & fishing with Trouthead, and pleased to find that Chris' wife & son seem to be civilizing him a bit. All in all, a fine trip!

Mitch I saw the solution to the rod hold snapping off today... caveman has a welded set of custom stainless rod holders

Caveman probably has more than one solution for Mitch. He's got a whole lot of cannonballs for halibut he will probably never use. He got carried away while he was pouring them.

No Way!!!

Weights aren't so much the prob as the rod holders sitting there trying to anchor the boat.

I also bought a mold this week, and Chris brought over a bunch of wheel weights,
I'm not gonna have time to pour 'em but I thinkn' Marty and Chris can spend some quality time together (kinda a father-son thingie ) with my mold.
