AR-15 Advice
      #330785 - 04/28/08 06:30 PM

Been wanting one for quite some time.
I figure with rising oil prices, food rationing will be soon to follow. That and Zombies running rampant, I need a black gun.
But seriously, looking for input on an AR-15 style rifle. I know little about them and every time I go on gunbroker.com, I come away more confused than when I started. There are tons of manufacturers and options available.
Not looking to drop 2K plus, but something with a collapsable stock, optics ready (Think tactical entry style).

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Rock River Arms builds a quality rifle. One in an M4 profile (16" barrel, A3 removable carry handle, collapsable stock) will run you around $900.

You could also buy a lower receiver ($100-130), stock ($40-100, and a lower parts kit ($65-149)and build a single lower in about 30 minutes. So for about $200-300 you could have a decent platform. You can literally assemble a lower with tools in most garages, and if you can put together toys on Christmas morning, it shouldn't be an issue. The lower receiver is technically the firearm.

The primary upgrade to the lower reciver I would recommend would be an upgraded trigger group, like a 2 stage or match trigger. Some AR triggers are a bit rough. From there you can add any AR-15 upper receiver you want.

Complete uppers will run you about $455 to $600, depending on what you want, and what caliber you want. For the first time, buy a completed upper and you'll be ready to go mall cop snactical at a moment's notice. If you are going .223/5.56 Nato, get the 5.56 Nato Chamber, or the .223 Wylde.

AR15.com is a great resource, and if you have any questions at all, I'd be happy to help.

Be forewarned, BRD (Black Rifle Disease) is addictive. I had one rifle last year, I now have parts for 5 lower (3 assembled), and 3 complete uppers. I'm assembling parts for another upper, and I'm not sure about the last one.

Thanks Dog.
Are all uppers and lower compatable? I've heard that some manufacturers are not compatable with others.
I've had a couple bad Christmas mornings in years past, but I'm pretty handy with a hammer I was thinking I'd buy a completed rifle, but I like your idea on putting one together, thereby learning how to assemble & dis-assemble it.
I've heard BRD is highly addictive, but it's GOT to be cheaper than chasing women. Every time I see your or Rapid Roberts gun pics, I get wood. Not literally mind ya, but I do like looking at the pretty pics.

W4f - I'd be down for a day throwing some lead down range.

There are essentailly two platforms, AR-15 and AR-10. In the AR-15 family 99% of the uppers out there will fit on any AR-15 lower, unless you get something exotic. AR-15's typically chamber any round shorter that 2.25", so the .204 Ruger, .223, 6.5 Grendel 6.8SPC, 7.62x39, .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf all work well. Ther are a bunch of calibers available.

In the AR-10 there are 3 or four different platforms where uppers won't interchange from one to the other. AR-10 rifles are designed primarily to fire .308 WIN/7.62x51, but you can get uppers in different calibers as well.

The lower isn't that big of a deal. I could get you a set of instructions and you would be fine. A screwdriver, set of punches, some electrical tape, and a small tack hammer are all I use to put mine together.

A complete rifle is also fine, which is how I got my first one. The nice thing is that you can change things as time goes on.

If you had to have only one, I'd vote OLY, because they have great customer service, but, really, how can you have only one?

Rattler works for Olympic Arms.

Oly makes a good product. I own an ML-2 bull barrel gun of theirs, as well as a PCR2 upper.

I am real happy with the Oly that I bought a couple of weeks ago. Oly offers a lifetime warranty and is local.

I have 6 Olympic Arms AR-15's, all work perfect, I have had zero problems...they're scary accurate!

Call Tom Spithaler (Rattler on SHer.net) @ (800)228-3471 for
info on an Oly dealer in your area, or if your in the Olympia area swing by the factory as they have all the models in the show room.

This is the place that I bought my Oly from. Large selection and great service. They claim to beat the price that the factory will give.

J&S is a good shop. Spent a few dollars there Saturday. A lot of the guys who work at that shop also work at Olympic Arms.
