fishing kelp beds
      #331435 - 05/03/08 12:52 PM

later this month i will be heading up to sekiu for a few days. when not halibut fishing, we will head to the kelp beds to fish for seabass and whatever else is in there. what are some good techniques? i've always used a leadhead and a rubber worm and usually had pretty good luck, but i would like to try some alternatives if we're not knocking them dead that way. are there larger versions of the freshwater bass crankbaits and spinnerbaits? if so, are they effective for seabass?

Point Wilson Darts. Drop 'em to the bottom, turn the handle once, and bounce 'em. Buy a bunch, because you'll lose some.

Don't keep any rockfish except sea bass and Kelp Greenling. They taste way better, and are all meat. Apparently a close relative of the Ling Cod.

I like to use as small of a jig as I can get to the bottom and keep it as close to the bottom as possible. Silver, Green, white all work great.

i googled the point wilson darts. $6.25 each? a little too spendy for something that i will lose a lot of. my dad likes to drift through the kelp beds so just dropping something to the bottom and bouncing it will result in a lot of snags on kelp. i'll buy a couple in case we find someplace besides kelp to fish, but we're not familiar enough with the area to know where else to fish for rockfish. why keep only seabass and greenling? we usually keep almost anything legal to keep. sometimes though we pull up things that are all head and spines. btw, when did yelloweye become endangered? i remember catching and keeping them fishing out of neah bay when i was a kid.

I haven't bought Pt. Wilson darts in a decade. Much cheaper to go to Swains in Port Angeles or Port Townsend and buy unrigged dart bodies and put my own split rings and hooks on them. Buy your trebles and rings in bulk and you can make your own for around $3 to $4.

Trophy, Greenling eat 500 times better than china rockfish and the others. Quillbacks are alright, but a bit fishier than greenling. Just my opinion.

Any dart style lure will work. I get rid of the trebles and tie on one of the pre-rigged Gamakatsu 510 assist hooks that comes with the lanyard on it. I tie it to the top end (where the line ties on) of the dart. You lose far fewer lures.

Yelloweye (and the other red rockfish) became off limits to retention several years ago. I can't remember exactly when, but it has been a long time since I've been able to keep any.

I suggest you get a Shelton Fish Descender and have a rod rigged with it. It'll get your non-keeper fish back to depth without having to pop their stomach. Popping anything on a baro-traumatized fish will likely lead to them dying. The SFD is cheap, works great, and has an excellent survival rate.

Don't be suprised if there are kings in there, some of my favorite king spots are on the edges of kelp beds. Couldn't tell you how many times I've tripled or quaded up, 3 rockies and a king. Mooched herring works as well as anything and cheaper then losing a bunch of $3-$4-$5 jigs.

And the fun part is, you never know what you are going to get with bait. Might be a big ling cod, might be a shark, might be some wierd bottomefish. Everything eats bait.

Wonder when using bait if you could rig the hooks so the points are turned into the body like bass fishing rubber worms...kinda makes em weedless....that and 40lb braid....hehe

John, I use 80 pound Braid. Turning the point in to the bait will reduce your hook-ups, but it might reduce the snags too...

Kind of an inherent problem with doing it that way...80lb braid can pull most snags out of those kelp beds, at least it should??

If you are running a mooching setup.. and want lings.. just bring itup about 10' off the boattom.. lings will come get it when the rockies won't..

80 lb line sure is a lot stronger that the 20 lb mono i currently have on my reel. this is also the same rod and reel that i use for trolling for salmon and for steelhead fishing. would 80 lb braid work for these things as well or am i better off sticking with what i've got?

T-H, You need to be careful not to overline your rod too much, or you'll be buying a new rod. That being said, I use a Lamiglas Kenai King rod, Abu-6500 reel, and 80 powerpro. I smoked a reel, but the rod still works.

Your set-up will work, but you'll lose more $8.00 darts.

my rod says 8-25 lb line one it so maybe i should just stick with what i've got. its worked for me since i was a kid. i'm going to buy four darts and when i lose them i'll just go back to rubber worms and lead-heads. this is a once a year trip so i don't really want to invest in a new rod and real.

I think you are missing out on a great opportunity to buy more gear...

I'd still line it with 20-30 pound braid. You feel every little bump.

I run 50lb braid and love it cause you "feel every little bump" but nearly lost a rod and reel when it hung and wife could not hold on.. hit freespool with the rod loaded up.. WOW what a mess. Cut the line and save the rod and reel and spent a while clearing the mess. I now run a 10 ' tag of 20 or 30 lb.

believe me, i would love to buy more gear. with all of the gear i've bought for bass fishing, a trolling motor, fish finder, battery, and motor repairs, i think i'm about at the limit for buying fishing stuff for a while and still maintain a happy household. i will take your advice on the line though. hopefully i can get to cabela's this weekend to get some. is there any brand in particular that's better than others?

I prefer Power Pro...

Tying a leader of 20 pound mono is a great idea.

Your rod will do just fine with 30 pd braid for jigs but you will have to learn to avoid extreme hard hooksets. They aren't necessary. I've never bothered with a mono shock tippet. Just don't see the need but you do have to develop the habit of retying your jigs after tangling with the bottom as the last 2 or 3 feet will become frayed and weak. Also be super aware of fishing thru any dense schools of dogfish. Your braid will rub against there sides which is like sandpaper and quickly end up frayed over the entire length that is exposed to this. You'll learn about this the hard way when you start loosing gear for unexplained reasons...the braid will simply break under the weight of jigging. Quick solution is to spool the line onto another reel...swapping line ends and giving you fresh line for the day.

You can get some stuff from Swains online.
