Just a few more days and a friend and I are off for Yakutat for seven days. We rent a drift boat and float the Situk mainly fishing a float and jig for steelhead. We reserved one day fishing the salt for halibut. I hear the bears are out this year. Last year I only seen one fresh track, they were still hibernating. The moose are bad enough, now this year we'll probably see both while floating the 14 miles of river. Fun, fun, fun, I'm ready!! Bill

Good fishing to you BBob! Hope the river has good flow for you guys. Where are you staying?
We did Yakutat Lodge and I thought the lodge and equiptment sucked. The guides weren't friendly at all because we didn't hire any. We took dented up old POS driftboats with junkers for turnarounds. Saw bear & moose the year I went along with about a million steelhead that was a plus. The catching for us was tough due to super low water conditions and gin clear water. We did manage to get into some fish though.
Have a safe trip!

Thanks. We stay at Glacier Bear Lodge. Package deal with room, meals, tips included. Sack lunches made to order, nice rooms and fantastic chow. Drift boats are spotted at the bridge, pick one of the three and go. Then the lodge moves the rental beater to the takeout sometime before you get there. Just tie up the boat, take your gear and head back to the lodge. We don't use the guides and they seem to cater to the fly flingers anyway. Bill

Have a good time. I have floated the Situk many times and really wacked so Steelhead.
That indeed is a long float. I used to try ton figure if I wanted to fish the top end of the float or the lower cuz it's hard to fish all of it in a day.
Saw a bear come out of the brush and take away some Silvers from a bankie and he had to run up on a fallen tree on the gravel bar.

I'm back and we had a wonderful time in Yakutat. Six to ten fish days on steel were the norm. Very, very few fresh fish hitting the river yet, water very low. Seen more pods of new fish in the lower river on our last day on the river.
We were the first clients to fish on Glacier Bear Lodge's new North River ocean charter boat. I put the very first fish blood in the box, a 110 lb. halibut, and we caught our other fish to finish out our limits of two each. Fishing butts in 78 ft. of water with a pound of lead is SWEET! I may have to make this a yearly happening.
