Heads up for you Wind R. bank/point fisherman- got a call from a couple fishing buddies who reported being turned back (on their way out to fish the point @ wind R mouth) this afternoon by the B&N/RR police (do they have railroad police?) Guess they were putting up signs 'no tresspass-violaters will be prosecuted' at the RR track crossing on that trail out to the point & escorted them out. Also were taking pix/getting lisc.#s of the cars in that little lot there (guys already down there fishing this morning.) 2nd hand info - but no reason to doubt it.
.....one more oft-productive bank access restricted - bad for the bankies but might make it easier on the boaters (maybe can leave helmets off.)
I get the safety thing.... but am thinking that hopping over the tracks might be safer than the alternative (they were opting to hike down into the canyon - just to wet a line for wind R springers.)

The way I see it is that the RR tracks are to weed out the dumb ones. Dang RR cops are playing god, They should let things happen naturally.
So they open bank fishing on the river for the first time and what do they do, Stop you from fishing it. The last time I was down around that area I seem to remember that you pretty much have to cross the tracks to get to the bank seeing how they follow the river.

Yes there are RR cops. I worked for the Union Pac. when I lived down there and talked to them regularly. I'm sure the reason for the no tresspassing is that they are afraid somone is going to get hit by a train, or stub their toe on the tracks and then sue them. That was the reasoning I got when I talked to them about it anyway. It's just BS in my mind, but it's still private property so I guess it's their right to be a jackass.

I just watched a show about railroads and railroad cops, They said that they are really starting to crack down on people crossing tracks. They are posting new no tresspassing sighns along tracks and will be out monitoring "tresspassing" more actively.

I always thought there were easements along railroad tracks, part of the negotiations since most of the land RR tracks are on was donated to them.

As far I as I have been told, RR cops are licensed officers that can write tickets that will stand up in court. All of the above info is correct, the RR is tired of lawsuits etc... from the poor genetic material that get's hurt or killed on their land. Private property is indeed private property.

A couple of fishermen were hit by trains and killed right in that area over the last couple of years. That's probably why they're stepping up the no tresspassing enforcement.

How braindead do you gotta be to get hit by a train?
I can see how vehicles get hit but on foot?
The only guy I ever knew that got hit by a train while walking along/across tracks was stoned out of his mind.
Must be some good stuff growing out around those parts.

I'll write my legislators and request that they make it illegal to stand in the middle of railroad tracks while talking on a cell phone. I suspect that Seattle has already attempted to pass such a law but it ended up becoming a $2 million 2 year study funded by an add on to their property taxes. They'll probably decide it would be better to include rural King County property owners as a funding source for the study.

i knew the guy that got clocked by the train along the wind river mouth. he was talking on his cell too. the thing is those trains rarely run on a straight rail. a guy could be on a curve and get clocked. i know of alot more deaths in gorge area than most hear about. i know of a young indian boy who got ran over on the BWSalmon tressle. guess it wasn't a pretty site for the guys fishing in boats in the area. literally pieces and chunks falling through the tressle ties.

The freight trains are still fairly loud but the Amtrak trains are really quiet. Both the recent Seattle hits and one here in the mid-columbia were by the Amtrak's. They do sneak up on you, especially if your mind and ears are elsewehere.

several years back i found a deer freshly killed lying in between the tracks. i was rather shocked that a deer could get wacked on tracks. i decided to move it off the track and toss down the ravine. thats when i looked back still puzzled by it all, i found the cell phone.
