Are people still catching steelhead on the upper Rogue? I will be in Grants Pass during Memorial Day weekend and I would love to be able to catch a steelhead (its been way to long!). I thought there might be some up by the dam, probably dark, but I dont care Thanks

I know all about boatnik and I will be there sometime, but fishing is more fun to me than boatnik I figure the water is lower up by the dam, but who knows.

Holy Shxt!! This is Dodge bridge 15 miles below the dam!!!
http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=14339000
To get the actual water flow out of the dam call: 1800 472 2434; that number will also give you the latest fish number over Gold Ray and at the hatchery.

Update: looks like the water flow projections are on a downward trend: http://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?GRAO3

Well, the only good news is, is the river has started to drop. That said, it will still be at least 3 week before you'd need 5 oz of lead to find the river bottom.
But, per the fish counts, the spring kings are still moving up over Gold Ray.

First the good news, then the better news.
We appear to have gotten by the huge snow melt run off and the rivers dropping back to reasonable fishing levels. The better news is the fish count is higher than I would have expected at this point. (both spring kings AND summer runs!!!!)

Waters still on the high side for straight fly rod fishing, but running gin clear over the top 60 miles of river. About 4,000 spring kings through the counter as of 6-1, so I'd suspect the number is not considerably higher.
The good news is the number of summer runs already as high Tou Velle Park. If you have access to a motor boat fish the water below TVP .... rumor has it .........

Well I FINALLY made it out today just for a lil foolin around because I thought this was gonna be the last time I was gonna fish until atleast august so i spent the whole afternoon out on the river... Tried mainly worm and spoons a couple times...
No luck... Just one squawfish.
Somebody I was talking to today said they were already catching summers at the hatchery! Is that true Fred?
But yea... Alot better news Im headed to the upper part of the rogue wednesday to do some fishing... WOOO WHOO... Maybe some half-pounders maybe a springer.... Hopefully a lil steelie action.

If a steelhead went over Gold Ray on May 14th it was counted as a winter. If a steelhead went over Gold Ray on May 15th it was counted as a summer. I would think any steelhead caught at the hatchery right now is most likely a winter run fish. We were catching big bright winters near the end of April well below GP this year. Just my .02

Yea... Barry I saw that...
Well I read Stircrazed or what ever his name is..... His report off the other site... I may re-consider what tackle I take... May even take a heavier reel too.
But yea... sounds like it doing good up there... Maybe that is why my dad wants to go before my surgery... lol

Well we didnt get any keepers
I had one on for like 10 seconds and my dad had one on for a minute or two....
BUT I finally landed atleast one fish... A nice size half pounder... It was pretty funny seeing him hit the crap out of the spoon I was using.
But yea... Snaggers and Jack@$$es are stupid and need to go fish at rainy falls... I had enough of them already for this year... all in one day too....
well Time to sit around for 4 weeks... yee haw!

"Somebody I was talking to today said they were already catching summers at the hatchery! Is that true Fred?"
Indeed-do; but has been mentioned above I suspect most of these fish were late winter runs. Here's the State of Oregon's web site that gives the daily fish counts (several rivers): http://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/fish_counts/gold_ray_dam.asp
