wild fish ?
      #33833 - 02/03/02 09:34 AM

i often read the boards and people seem to think hatcheries should be shut down due to the inferiour gene`s that they carry that may have been transferred in the past from other rivers etc., now the latest and greatest thing is to plant hatchery fish carcas`s in rivers to add nutrients ? is this a good idea to put them in streams, isnt it transfering hatchery genes to wild fish and polluting there gene pools ? maybe i`m way off but it seems logical.

The danger lies not in placing the fish in the stream, but the potential spread of disease. One of the major problems in streams to the East is whirling disease.
The genes are not spread in that manner.
Hatchery practices of the past would use only the returning hatchery fish. They continue to use the same genetics over and over again which weakens the stream genetics of natural selection.

The Weaker genetics allow disease to spread easier. The potential to spread the disease to the wild fish which may not be disease resistant.
