Wayne, We ALL need to contact Jim Buck nd Lynn Kessler now and urge, no strongly urge them to fight to keep the hatcheries open. They can be e-mailed easily by entering www.wa.gov then Legislture under dist. 24. I sent out a message to them this a.m. and had a reply from Kessler(who supports Solduc ) this p.m.
We all must work to keep them open or sell or fishing gear in the future when there will be no hatcheries and a mandatory catch and release on wild steelhead.

I am willing to bet that they won't close the Sol Duc hatchery. The Sol Duc hatchery raises Elwha chinook (they snag native chinook out of the Elwha for broodstock and send the eggs to the Sol Duc) and since the Elwha chinook are listed they could get sued for potentially hurting the fish. They raised some of the Elwha kings at Hurd Creek hatchery on the Dungeness, but they have limited space. I don't know if they will find an alternative place to send the kings. They can't just send them anywhere because of diseases. They bring the young chinook back to the Elwha and let them "imprint" there so that they come back to the Elwha. I'm not sure why they don't just raise them at the Elwha. Anyways, I really doubt they will close down the Sol Duc hatchery.

GRRRRRRR! I guess what distrurbs me most is that we have around 20 million people living here in Washington State. And our fishing resorses are deminishing. they are talking about closing hatcherys? How many people are going to live here in the Northwest come the year 3000? Economic growth says it will be 120 million. close hatcherys? I think they need to take the money that I pay for all my liesences each year and put it to something benificial like the hatcherys that they want to close.

reelnut Im glad you showed some emotion and intersest in this subject. It is imperative that we call or e-mail our reps. in dist.24 and voice our opinion. you raise some good points on future population which can be tied to economic base. Contact anyone who you know and tell them to call 1-800-562-600 Leg. hotline or www.wa.gov to leave e-mail for Buck and Kessler
good luck

Bringing this back up....very important we contact and rally the troops to support our local fisheries. The proposed hatcheries include the Dungeness and Sol duc....That is a major impact to our fisheries here on the Peninsula.
We could use the support of some of the local economic development groups on this one.

Hey! If they're not gettin'n enough money, they should close 'em............ Just kidding! I know certain hatcheries will close down to provide a natural spawning fish .......... imagine that! Problem is......... GREED! ? My slant is hatcheries want native fish back in the rivers so they let their returning fish spawn in the river, no-clip fish, and simply close the hatchery-smolt program to let the fish "do their thing" in the river. "Problem-greed". Commercial-netting fish for profit. White or Indian.......We don't discriminate here!

Sawman it is not the "hatcheries", it is the people in charge in Olympia. The hatcheries have to do what the idiots in charge tell them.
