Tree stands in the Northwest?
      #33895 - 05/03/01 08:50 PM

Anybody actively hunt from a tree stand? I know lots of hunters in my area and can only think of one who used a tree stand. He used it after scouting a big buck and set up on his path he was using every day.

I have done some. We used to do a lot back in the days of bear baiting. Awesome way to hunt. While deer hunting once off a permanent stand I had a huge bobcat come in.
My second largest buck came off of a deer stand. I had taken the scent glands off of a large buck a friend had shot several days before. While in checking my stands I had found where a buck had worked over an alder patch so I went in and rubbed those scent glands all over. He came in that night really looking like another buck was in his territory. His nostrils were flared wide open and he was really smelling. Big mistake.

Treestands are an extremely under-utilised tool out here. Back home (Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia) every deer hunter has at least one (I personally have five). I have used them with good success out here, too, especially in the early archery season, when the blactail are hitting old fruit orchards here on Fort Lewis.

tree stands are an excellent way to hunt deer and roosevelt elk. We set up 6 to 12 every year. We use store bought and home made. If you have any older hunters in your group it is an excellent way for them to get a critter. We have a couple in there 70's. Even thow they can not stomp the brush all day they have the patience to sit and watch. Just remember to take youstands down and remove all bolts, steps and ect.
