What type of survival gear do you carry afield when hunting. Compass, knife, survey tape, parachute cord, space blanket and matches with fire starter are my essentials.

Unless I am hunting an are that I am unfamiliar with, I am not too conserend with getting lost. That would make my most important "survival" item - TOILET PAPER. Besides the obvious, it makes good fire starter(preferably unused).

I don't hunt roads, is there any good recipes for them?  Okay if I was totally unfamiliar with the area, I would pack with me TP for the reasons stated above, trail mix(YOU GOTTA EAT SOMETHING), matches and or lighter, and my leatherman. The leatherman wave has a saw that works really well. A compass and some light weight rope come in handy. Get toomuch stuff and you are camping, not hunting!

Guys all the above are good. I include a SMALL first-aid kit, a signal mirror (doubles for putting on camo face-paint), map of hunting area (compass isn't much good without a map) and a couple of candles (best firestarter that I've found, and can heat up a tent or lean-to in a pinch). This stuff fits easily in my butt-pack along with my bugle tube, extra knife, saw, para-cord, space blanket, etc.

All you need is a roll of duct tape. A big roll. You can use it as a bandage( or bondage). You can tape up a shelter. Use it as a deer drag. Hang your tree stand with it.Tape your rattling horns on the doe you just shot. Use it as toilet paper. I think you could write a book about this.

Drifter, you been watching the "Red Green Show" again? Dang Cananadians think they can fix anything with duct tape, eh?! Everybody knows that duct tape is only part of the essential outdoors tool kit...still need parachute cord and a P-38.

Greg, - You got that right. The P-38 is the most important survival tool of them all.Anyone with a pocket metal detector can find the long forgotten cache of a post hippie era survivalist but you can't open those cans with your teeth. The duck tape is great for resealing the left-overs.

I have never been lost. Just confused over night once and a few times it just got to dark. I have learned that the jacket you thought you did not need, fire starter, emergency sleeping bag, something to boil water in, extra munchies, istant coffee or tea, lots of water or a filter and a first aid kit go a long way in making a unplanned night in the woods comfortable. Allmost forgot. Duct 100 mph (duct) tape is a must. Important to note with these few thing in a fanny pack if you do have to spend an unplanned night you can still hunt in the morning why you are trying to figure out were you are.

My boys and I have been hunting the north east corner of the state for the last 3 years and over there you had better be prepared. Alot of our hunting is low and in the Alfalfa but when we head high we pack accordingly. Lighters, warm clothes, fire starter, compasses, food, water, Mini mag flashlites with xtra batteries. This year we will be carrying 2 mile range small walkie talkies w/xtra batteries and of course I carry my GPS. I have never spent the night in the woods, but I've come in pretty late before. I always tell someone where I am going and I stick to that plan. My boys also carry whistles on a cord around their neck.

Hey Lazy, how far northeast do you hunt? I hunted Republic last year and had a blast! I shot my first whitetail! Yippee!

you are where we are. We stay at Black Beach up on Curlew Lake. We do most of our hunting up out of Curlew. Up more towards the Canadian border. We lucked out and got in with some locals who let us hunt their farms. Already got our cabin reserved for this year plus I will probably spend a week up there this summer. I could move up there.
