Talking to the Elk is one of the funnest things to do in the fall. Got any favorite type of calls? I have used my voice to cow call and stop bulls. Usually I use a latex reed mouth call and a tube. I believe the manufacturers name is Big Bull. I like their reeds because of the smaller mouth piece size. I have tried some other brands with limited sucess in noise making. One of the homemade ones I have is a conduit pipe wrapped into a coil. Not the most realistic sounding bugle. Anybody make there own calls? Not much to them.

Vacuum cleaner hose, Marty! That's what most of the commercial ones seem to be made of. I use a Glenn Berry bugle tube and diaphrams. They work pretty well for me, but I'm an old turkey hunter from WAAAY Back, and know my way around mouth calls. One trick that we use in our camp is to make a sleeve of polar fleece and cover the outside of the tube with it for a "silencer"...ever rub one of those corrugated hoses against an alder while trying to get the darn thing out of your pocket? I did, ONCE, and believe me, it didn't take that elk long to figure out he didn't like that sound. Greg

Yup that was the fella who made my calls. I can call pretty good with his reeds. Turkey calling would be a blast. He also made a reed on the outside of a tube that you just put onto the hose. I have my tube covered in a camo piece of cloth.

I have used the primos cow call. they have a single and double reed and the double is loud great if you want one the carries. They are faily small and you can wear around you neck easily without any discomfort. I have seen a whole herd come running due to a cow call.

Stadle, I have one of those, too. They sound great, but if you're bowhunting, be careful of having anything dangling around your neck. I caught a binocular strap with my bowstring once, and it nearly caused a bad accident (never found the arrow) and a nasty burn around my neck. I always carry my binos and calls in a pocket, now. Right on Greg, Thanks for the tip. I prefer to give a big bull a jolt from my 300 win mag loaded with 180 grain barnes X bullets. Maybe some time in the future I will try bow hunting.

Stadle that sounds like some serious medicine for elk! I've got a perfectly good Ruger No.1 7mm mag in the rack, that shoots the tiniest little groups you ever saw with the 160 grain Barnes "X" bullets, sighted in to hit dead on at 275 yards. I'm just too damn hard headed to stop bowhunting until I get one with my bow.Greg

Cow calls work real good!! If you hunt with more than one person each one of you can use one and imitate a small herd. They will mask the noise we all make wial we are in the woods. The cow call will also bring in the bears and couger.

i have one of the old larry jones elk calls with the wood end on it. i called in many bulls with it and i don't know how many times i lost it and had to go back and find it. now i put it away to retire it but had a new primos call that sounds as good as my old one, hand delivered by kevin hollingsworth from texas.

I use a "power bugle" Now (got tired of almost swallowing Diaphrams)I also Like the Skreery Cow call. But it does tend to stick in the cold. This year i am trying the Sleazy Cow By big bull. I kinda like the name
