Lead is not inert in rivers or lakes but the dissolution of lead is highly dependent upon the pH of the water. The more acidic the water the greater the rate of dissolution and leads entry or mobilization into the food chain/web. Energy also effects dissolution rates. Running water increases the rate. The Swedish study I posted a link to found a 1% per year dissolution rate for lead exposed to running river waters. It can also enter the food chain if particles are ingested by birds and absorbed into their blood stream. Other wildlife that prey upon them or feed upon their carcass' ingesting the contaminated material and in turn further spreading the contamination. In more alkaline environments lead ions will tend to complex with other ions into somewhat less readily available forms to living organisms. To some degree this may help form a barrier on the surfaces of large lead particles that slows the dissolution or mobilization of lead into the food chain. There's a megaton of more info that I could go into....suffice to say that the stuff is nasty and persistent and eventually we won't be using it either by choice or by law.
Slinkies made with lead shot don't slow or keep the lead from entering the environment even one ion.

Luke, Why are you even posting in on this topic? If you want to stand on a stool behind Nick and point your finger at me saying "ya what he said".... You need to man up and post some information on the subject.
Another perfectly good thread going into the toilet!
Blah, blah, blah.
I only post information on topics that I know for sure is fact.
This thread wouldn't have gone anywhere until you starting ragging on welders like they are some second class of citizens. I have good friends and family who are very good welders and very intelligent to boot. Keep your generalizations to yourself.

So SouthFork...Am I just another idiot? If I was wrong and you knew it, then fine, but don't go spouting off to people saying they are wrong because they are younger than you. Being a young broke welder does not make me stupid. Biology/chemistry is my new college major, welding technology/metallurgy was my prior.

Well, that being said, I guess that means the railroad traffic will come to a stand still in the Mountain Home area for awhile.

They are used spikes, yes, but I'm not strong enough to pull 'em out of the ties.

I think that all welders are idiots. Not just your average idiots but they have a gene that really make them stand out when in a group with other idiots. Far from the sharpest crayon in the box and not even close to a dull one. More like that little worthless piece in the bottom of the box when you dump it out. Hardly enough crayon to draw a lead atom (Pb) let alone try to split it.
Nick, I might be an old welder that is doing pretty damn good for myself but that doesn't make me stupid. Age doesn't have anything to do with it. If you read the above posts of mine I was talking pure lead. Lead fishing weights are far from pure, as you well know (I'm sure).
Brady, That's what I was talking about. Maybe I should have worded it different to keep the little mini me out of it

Time for people to put away their crayola crayons. Got something of value to add then feel free to add it. Got nothing of value to add please post it on pisson dot com or some other site that gives a rip.

Sorry, not arguing but I forgot to mention this earlier. The lead-based solder is the problem in water pipes, not lead pipes themselves. I don't think it is used anymore, although it is still present in way too many homes.

Not cool Gooose. You edit my post and leave Southfork's garbage about how all welders are idiots unedited. You keep this crap up and you'll have alot less folks hanging around this site.

Luke, I didn't attack anybody but only made statement towards a career or skill set. I are one so I basically called myself an idiot!! At about 2:30 today I was in total agreement with my statement.
Nick, I'll try to get some pictures of one or several of the things I do. You as a welder would probably find it interesting.
Back to the topic...
I was taking a leak at the Flying J and had a brain storm. While staring at the condom dispenser, why not use one as "the container" ? Aerodynamics would be far superior to the 16oz Keystone lite can and you wouldn't be littering. They come in many colors and sizes. Pee Wee for side drifting Steelies to the Jumbo Hulk Ticklers for major sticking power for sturgeon.
Now for the love of gawd don't post this on some internet bulletin board. We all know everything on the Web is true....
