Show Stopper
      #339990 - 07/15/08 11:30 AM

There are some things in life that effect you so much that things cease to progress for a period of time. They can be at work where maybe someone missed a part or something was engineered wrong and the whole job comes to a stand still for quite some time. In your personal life they can be physically crippling or emotionaly devistating. I call these things show stoppers.

My 8 year old lab Amiah had a tumor on her throat and it has been growing in spurts on and off for the last year and a half. My wife and I had both decided that when she gave us that look then we knew it would be time and we would let her go before she was no longer happy and in pain. I was not here which I will never forgive myself for, while I was in Alaska last week my wife had to put down my best friend.

She was older than 2 of my 3 kids so they went through infantcy climbing all over her and pulling on her lips and ears. For 6 years I hunted her about 60 days a year and have no idea how many hours we spent in a blind together have no idea how many ducks and honkers she brought to me. I do know that no matter if the birds weren't flying or if I was just going to work for the day she wanted to be with me.

I did pretty well with the whole thing while up fishing, but I didn't do so well when I got home yesterday. Last night I found my 7 year old sitting on her dog bed with tears streaming down her face. Next my 5 year old came up to me holding her chew toy that she had found in the yard, again with tears streaming down her face.

God bless my Vet who is a hunting partner for making it as easy on my wife as possible. He said a prayer for her and told her to go fetch birds somewhere else.

This is a major show stopper.

My god I hope I never loose an actual person that's close to me, I may not survive. I can hardly even write this and no way in hell can I talk about it.

Rich, been through it twice in the last 5 years, and it really sucks. I buried Susie on an island in the Snake, out in the open where she always ran when birds were working. I figured she liked that spot.

I'm thinking about you Brother. It sounds shallow, but it gets better. In my mind there is something only a dog brings to the home. I had to get a pup a few months after I ut Maggie down. When the time is right, you will too. You will know when it the right time for you and your family.

Rich, very sorry to hear about the loss of your hunting partner. I haven't figured out yet way God didn't give pooches a very long life here, but there's alot of things we can't figure out. You'll be in our thoughts and yes we've been there too. My first lab, that I got in McCall in 1974, I had to put down in her prime. She got diabetes (probably from sharing donuts etc. from me)and I treated her for months, but one day she couldn't see to get out of the pickup and was crashing into stuff, so I told Michelle we had to put her down, still about makes me cry to write that. I have a yellow right now that is 11 and I think pheasant hunts are out for her this fall and I dread the thought of things to come. Just know you have alot of folks that read your post and are supporting you.
take care, dan

Yeah, I'm facing the same thing now with my 14 1/2 year old dog. She's still active enough, even though she's done hunting, but really slowing down now... she's been a faithful companion through good times and sad times!!

Tough deal Rich. I Wish the good ones could live as long as we do.

Show stopper cant quite say it all. Shows are short periods, the loss of a true companion and partner is a life stopper, it seems as if your whole life just stops and there is nothing to fill it. I have been through the loss of a few good companions but 1 was as hard as you speech of. It is a tough deal and in ways it makes you feels weak but in fact it makes you stronger. I hate the feeling but it happens and life can be cruel. Hang in there and always remember past dogs are what make the migrations begin. At least that is what my grandfather told me after I lost old Rooster.

The pain will subside with time. It's been two years for me and I'm just starting to think about a pup.
