What is every ones favorite technique for low ,clear water for summer steelies? I fish for summer steel on the John Day, in Feb & March, & Deshutes summers in Sept, But was thinking of heading to the coast next week. Small line small bait? Any advice would be welcome.

Small terminal gear (actually use flies, no kidding), 6-8 # test line, and even lighter leader if you can. Actually, I fly fish 95% of the time and this is when the 15' RIO leaders go on the end of a full floater.

Long time, no see...
I agree with Fred, 6 or 8# line if it is really low. For baits, try small(4mm) roe colored beads, or dime size egg clusters, and don't forget sandshrimp!
Also, try small jigs in buggy patterns, i.e. black, purple, olive, rusty brown.
Nightcrawlers/small corkies are hard to beat, if there aren't any smolts around.
Good luck, and don't forget the camera.

Spinners work great too , small and dark colored with just a little flash . We've been nailing them on the Wilson with our headbanger lures with brass blades . check them out on our web page

Summers are built for fly fishing. Small jigs under a bobber will also work well. I love spoons and spinners, go with burnished brass or copper blades when the sun is up. Hmmm, maybe a road trip in my future...

Sounds good Joe. I need to blow the stink off & get away from the ranch & the f***ing cows for a while. I can think of a few cows that could get hurt if they keep tearing fences down & getting me into trouble with ODFW & USFS

One thing I've yet to try, but it's on this summer 'agenda.' Always wondered (I should register and get another 'name' for this post)was how a very small spinner would work off the end of a spey rod/fly rod.
Anyone ever tried it?

Small dark purple/black flies. Teeny clusters of eggs. Single corky with no or very little yarn. Small darker spinners (RvrFisher's Metalic Black ones are awesome)

Thanks for the info guys! I'm thinking 1.26 oz of C4 on a #1 hook will do it

Fred,
Don't see why you couldn't use a very small spinner on a fly rod , except the fly line would twist some , might wreak some kind of havoc with your tippet . Best way to do it would be to tie up a fly that had a small spinner blade (sz.0) hanging off the bottom of it , so it just fluttered rather than spun . I've seen some jigs tied up that way . If you going to go to the dark side though you might as well go all the way and use a spinning rod
