Has anyone ever gone up the lower (flats) section of the Nisqually river. I understand that it can be done because it is very slack water. I am interested in taking my Willie Drift boat with an 8hp outboard into that are in August. Where in puget sound would I launch to do this?

i have, but it's extremely treacherous without a jet. the lower river is a minefield of logs, stumps, and indian netting equipment(they leave hundreds of floats tied to logs or underwater anchors, and these usually have 20' of loose rope trailing behind).

when the nets are in, they are usually submerged at high tide, just enough to catch props.

I don't know of anywhere close...the one time we launched it was in the lower reach by the old shipwreck area....quite the haul in a drifter.

luhr's landing is the closest launch, but it's a little bit of a trip in a drifter, especially if the wind picks up!

If you wanted to fish the lower portion, I would launch at the rough launch at the handicap hole and float down to the Puget Sound, then take out at Luhr beach rather than taking the driftboat upriver. As said before, hope that the wind is calm. I've been through it in a buddy's jet sled before but I'm not sure I would want to do that stretch in a driftboat. Make sure you go on the days when the gill nets are not in the water as it is a slalom course.

If it were me with your driftboat, I'd fish further up the river. Launch at the Tank Bridge just upstream of the Casino or at the Power Plant in Yelm, and then take out at the Handicap hole.

Oh yeah, and if you've got an open seat on this trip for any of your buddies from Steelheader.net, give me a PM.

It is not advisable to attempt runing up the nis with a prop if you are unaware of the precise path to take. It is a mine field of logs and concrete blocks that could cause you some serious problems. Most of the logs you will encounter are at such an angle in the lower river that it will cause you to run up on them and possibly swamp your selves. Especially when there is colered water in the river, you cant see the logs that are only 6 inches under the surface. The better bet would be to just leave your kicker up and float down and fish all the water hard for how it gives you to fish it... Then stay in the river until high tide, { FLOAT } out then run across the flats to luhr beach.
You could launch at public fishing area and fish a lot of good water. You must be very carefull as a lot of the river is narrow in spots....

Best to launch above and take out at Luhr beach..Done it without a motor a few times but wouldnt suggest it unless the tides just right..When the tide is out the river splits make sure you stay to the right if not you will be stuck in the mud until the tide comes in..

Yeah, what hooknhawgs said.
Not legal to fish above the tank crossing anyways. Plus the power plant drift is one of the most treacherous.

I would feel comfortable approacing the mouth on ingoing tide with a DB and low speed outboard. spend a few hours up there and then go out with the tide. Head out for the green can, don't cut across and you should be fine

PM me if you have any other ??'s

It is legal to fish above the tank crossing now. New regs in place for this year.

I fish the lower section with my drift boat launching at the gravel bar on the Ft. Lewis side. I head down at low tide and stay above the I-5 bridge; fish until the tide comes back up and then run back up river with the kicker.

There's a large gravel bar just below the launch which will eat a prop if you run it at low tide; draggin the boat up is a possibility but it has to be done through the bankers.

Last time I checked it was C&R above the Tank Bridge only, I don't think the 1 mile drift from the Power Plant to the Tank bridge to be very treacherous and you can fish from the bridge down.

Well, there won't be as many snaggers down there, and you will be below most nets. But as said here, if you look at that river in low tide you will see a crapload of nets all stuck in the mud with the floats and part of the net still free to dangle around just enough to wrap around your prop and send you flying forward. Unless they cleaned it up in the past 3 years.
